The Secret to Creamy Cleansers

by Lina on June 7, 2011

Cream or milk cleansers have never appealed to me, partly to do with all that faffing around with cotton wool and the thick texture of the cleanser. It just seemed like a giant waste of money as most of the time, in my case at least, my skin didn’t even feel that clean afterwards. I much preferred a simple face wash for the morning, and an oil cleanser for evening. Quick, easy and convenient.

But then, I was given a cream cleanser by NuBo in a goody bag at a Nubo event a few months back. It was the NuBo Cell Dynamic Velvet Cleansing Cream, to be precise. I had actually just had an amazing mini facial using NuBo products by legendary facialist Caroline Hitchcock, who cleansed, exfoliated (with a diamond exfoliator, no less, more on that another time though) and polished my skin till it was glowing and beautiful again. From that moment on I have been using NuBo Cell Dynamic Velvet Cleansing Cream every morning and evening, and I have never looked back.

This product, in a nutshell, is just a pure luxury to use. You may wonder how luxurious can cream cleansers even be? But even in the primary stages of massaging the product onto my skin, skin instantly starts to look better. The quality and texture of the cleanser is so refined that you almost feel like you’re massaging in a really special night cream; I sometimes regret having to wipe it off, actually. However, the trick to making it the perfect (and I genuinely believe this is the perfect cream cleanser) is in the removal. This is where I have been going wrong all these years. In short, skip the cotton wool/pads. Instead, invest in some natural cleansing sponges (I buy mine from Superdrug) and once moistened, use them to wipe the cleanser off of with. The natural sponge gently exfoliates as it wipes the dirt off, and it really gives you that clean feel that everyone craves when cleansing.

I have such delicate skin, and using this product with this technique twice a day hasn’t in the slightest irritated it. In fact, my skin is much smoother and far better prepped for moisturiser than without using the little sponges. It’s all that gentle exfoliation on a daily basis. Skin loves this.

Of course, if I’m wearing make-up I use an oil cleanser in the evenings first, then I use this cream cleanser afterwards (I’m a double cleanse girl, clean skin is my ‘thing’). I wouldn’t recommend using this as your sole make-up removing cleanser, no no.

But is it worth the cash?

Initially, knowing the price range of NuBo products I instantly dismissed the notion of re-purchasing the products again, regardless of how good they were. Just way out of my budget. But actually, for £28, which is what this cleanser costs, I do think it’s worth it. Yes, it’s expensive. But mine has lasted me five months with just under half left now. I predict it will probably last another five, or at least three/four. So considering a bottle lasts about eight to ten months it’s actually not too bad. And there’s more, Harrods are currently offering a full length (50 minutes) NuBo facial for £50, the cost of which is redeemable against any of their products. Guess where I’m buying my next cleanser from?

You could be thinking that maybe if you simply bought the natural cleansing sponges any old cleansing cream would reap the same results. But no. I’ve tried a few others since then, and none have been as enjoyable, effective and lovely as my NuBo one. My NuBo cleanser is like cashmere is comparison to them. And I’ve even tried SkinCeuticals Gentle Cleanser (priced £27). It was good, but the texture and quality was nothing compared this NuBo one (they do have other amazing products though that I will write about soon).

You can book in for a NuBo facial from a selection of four types at Harrods on 0207 730 1234 (ext 3285). I might even treat myself to one pre-birthday and pick up some extra cleanser (remember, the facial price is redeemable against products!) whilst I’m at it. WIN.

Oh gosh, it looks like you and me found our Holy Grail Cleansers at the same time and both are expensive! Mine is the Dermalogica UltraCalming Cleanser. I currently buy the UltraCalming travel kit because it has all the things I use (and I price I won’t start hyperventilating over. $40!) The full size of my cleanser is $51.

The kit comes with a serum, but I haven’t the faintest idea what the use of serum is…so I have, I think, three serums? Or maybe two. Thankfully, by the time I run out of cleanser, I run out of the Barrier Repair, and usually the toner (somehow I have a lot left over this time). So, it’s worth just buying the kit because buying everything I use would cost $163 without tax (about $175 with tax. Ouchies)!!! Maybe I’ll ask for my entire system in full size products for Christmas. Yea, that’s a Christmas gift for me. Big price for a Holy Grail System.

I have such expensive skin, it seems.
