GlossyBox January!

Here it is! The contents of my January GlossyBox – in a gorgeous bright pink box!!!!What’s inside..
Eyeko Skinny Eyeliner in Powder Pink
Davines Moisturising Balm
Davines Cleansing Nector
FAB Gentle Body Wash
Murad Hybrid Skin Perfecting Primer – Dewy FinishThey even gave a lovely little GlossyBox sweet! It was yummy (I had actually ripped off the wrapper to stuff it in my mouth before realising I should probably photograph it first! Ha).I actually already have the Murad primer but I can imagine that being a big stand out product for everyone else in this box. My two favourite products are the Eyeko Skinny Eyeliner in Powder Pink, as I think it’ll be a really lovely colour for opening up the eyes on the waterline, and the Davines Moisturising Balm – as it’s pretty much a super nourishing product for anywhere. I’ve been wearing it on my lips and it’s very lush and rich. I’m considering using it as a face mask but need to research more how beneficial it’ll be for that use. You can use it as an intensive hair conditioner too, which makes it handy if you need an all-purpose product for holiday or something. As a precursor to this box, GlossyBox also very thoughtfully sent me some flowers – ROSES, in fact. For Valentine’s Day. It’s amazing how just getting something as simple as flowers can really make your day. Was beaming for ages.. Thank you so much for them, GB! x

An introduction to Diego Dalla Palma..

I’ve talked about this brand a couple of times in my recent vids, but I’ve never actually written about them yet. For those that don’t already know, Deigo Dalla Palma are a premium Italian brand that have just recently become exclusive to Tesco in the UK. Nothing will change, the prices will remain the same (among the ranks of MAC, Stila, etc), the quality and product will remain the same, the buying experience will remain the same.. Except now instead of popping into a boutique or department store, you can pick the product up from a Deigo Dalla Palma counter whilst doing your weekly shop at Tesco!

I’m am only covering two of the four products pictured above in this post, the Make-up Fixer and Classic Lipstick in 28 Classic Red.

Diego Dalla Palma Classic Lipstick in 28 Classic Red
As with all things twenties themed, classic red lipstick is making a BIG come back for 2012. I have so many reds in varying shades and textures but my favourite of the moment is without a doubt this. Ironically, it’s not so much for the colour, as lovely as it is, but more for the brilliant formulation and wonderful texture. The lipstick glides on, resulting in a creamy, nourishing semi-matte finish. The pigment is lovely and rich, and wears really comfortably with good lasting power.

Apparently, this formulation is also anti-ageing too, but I can’t comment on whether my lips have benefited from that as it’s not really an every day colour for me to reap such residual improvements.Lastly, the colour is fabulous. Probably brighter and more orange than I’d usually go with in a red, but very wearable and ever so striking!
(Sorry for the crappy pics, my camera is awful for picking up reds so I used my phone camera to take these ones. The lipstick is much creamier and richer than in the pics. Other than the lippy, I am make-up less too (which is also probably why I look washed out and flat)!)

Diego Dalla Palma Make-up Fixer
I took this product out with me to the states when I went in November, and me and my friend used it every day, sometimes twice (day and eve), to help keep our make-up in place during our long, all day sight seeing plans. It’s very similar in concept to when people used to use hairspray on their faces to ‘seal’ their make-up – a technique that is probably (hopefully) obsolete now due to the obvious health risks. I admit, it smells a lot like hairspray but I’m trusting this is a lot kinder (and safer!).

I found it worked well, my make-up did appear to last longer and stay in place better (especially around the eyes!), but I must admit that if your skin is irritated or overly sensitive at all this might sting a little at first and dry it out further. For that reason, I only now use it every now and again, for busy days and special occasions –  not daily unfortunately, as my skin can’t handle it. On the other hand, if you have oily skin and suffer from your make-up slipping during the day, I imagine this could potentially be a God send!

Two great products from this new to the UK brand, looking forward to the future offerings from Diego Dalla Palma and the convenience of having them in a Tesco!

Diego Dalla Palma Classic Lipstick priced £14.50, and Diego Dalla Palma Make-up Fixer priced £18.00. Both available from Tesco.

Pink Jeans..

I bought my first pair of pink jeans this time last year and I had never anticipated wearing (and loving!) them as much I have. They are pretty much the only pair of trousers I ever wear (I’m generally a skirt/dress girl at other times) and they are surprisingly so easy to make outfits with. I lived in them during Spring/Summer last year and the only reason I wear them out less often now is ’cause I find them tricky to pull off with my Winter footwear. I was actually having this conversation on Twitter earlier about how I think a black boot really ruins a pale pink jean – just not the right or natural match for it at all in my eyes.It was seeing Cameron Diaz snapped in this pair that made me hunt for my peachy toned pink ones last year! Definitely the best pink jeans I’ve come across on a sleb..

Anyway, I digress.. I love my current pair so much I have decided to invest in another for this Spring. In some ways I do feel like it is a little ‘so last year’ but I have a feeling that this trend is gonna still be rocking for several Summers to come so may as well embrace it seeing as I like it so much.

The two pairs I have whittled my choices down to are both from ASOS (like the original pair). I actually think this is mostly through laziness but also because ASOS seems to be the only place carrying these styles in their petite range – FAIL everywhere else!

Pastel Pink
This pair is probably my favourite.. It’s just a gorgeous pastel pink without being too chalky and sickly sweet. Really wearable, considering how light it is, and actually just another fresher alternative to wearing crisp white jeans. I should add that I have never been one to go for the South of France white denim look, but these jeans let me hang out in both camps as they do have a whiff of that look (which will definitely be a novelty for me), but are still undeniably fashion forward and ‘cool’.

Neon Pastel Pink
So undecided about this pair, I think the styling above has not helped it visually at all either. In fairness I had the same hesitations about pink jeans in general last year before I actually got round to owning my pair and realising how utterly wearable they are, so maybe that will be the case again with this pair. However I have to admit, I just don’t know how good I’m gonna look in the garish neon, almost pukey, pink colour. I genuinely can’t decide whether I think it will look fabulous or awful. I keep trying to imagine it in my head against nice tan skin, sandals and a white vest (completely opposite to how it’s been styled here), but I don’t know if I’m romanticising it and imagining how I want it to look rather than how it actually will look.

I know neon pastel is huge for SS12 and these are definitely the most on trend option of the two, but I have no idea whether it will work on me..

As you can tell I’m leaning toward the first pastel pair just for their simplicity and practicality, but part of me thinks the neon would be the smarter option for this year. What are your thoughts? And how would YOU style them?

The Harley Medical Group NEW Skin Care Range

The Harley Medical Group, known most commonly for their surgical practices, have bought out a luxury skin care range and very kindly sent me a few bits to try. I picked three products from the range that I felt suited my skin and its concerns best, and used them consistently for a three week trial.

The products I picked were the Gentle Cleanser, Replenishing Exfoliator and the Anti-Ageing Youth Serum.

The Harley Medical Group Gentle Cleanser
Regular readers of my blog probably know I tend to favour a cream cleanser for mornings, and an oil cleanser for evenings. It’s been a while since I’ve tried using a simple foaming face wash as my main cleanser, something not usually recommended for dryer skin, so understandably I did have reservations.  However, being true to my trial, I used this cleanser every morning in place of my cream cleanser and then every night after my oil cleaner (it’s a gentle cleanser so not really strong enough to remove make-up) to give it a proper testing.

What first surprised me about this cleanser was that is was so creamy (despite being a pale yellow gel texture in the bottle), and felt very moisturising on the skin when mixed with water. Did not at all feel like I was stripping my skin, and I didn’t notice any dead skin build up (something I feared since culling the cream cleanser and exfoliating facial sponge regime I had gotten used too for mornings). For cleansing products that are this creamy and nourishing, I do tend to worry that they aren’t being thorough enough with the actual cleaning part, but my skin definitely felt properly cleansed after use – no multiple attempts needed to get that nice clean feeling – and it wasn’t dried out either! I actually could be swayed to use this all the time as it really does keep the moisture in the skin, and is definitely heads and tails above any other face wash I’ve tried.

The Harley Medical Group Anti-Ageing Youth Serum
I was really excited to try this product as since hitting 30, anti-ageing is ALL that I think about (actually, it’s been all that I think about since the age of 23, which might explain my 12 year old like face). This product promises to increase collagen, improve skin tone and firmness, whilst preventing age spots – a real concern of mine after having a skin test a while back and discovering I am potentially prone to them.

I actually started to notice results after a week of using this, my complexion definitely did look clearer and brighter, and a couple of blemish marks on my cheek which had scarred were starting to fade. My only complaint was that if I didn’t use a strong moisturiser afterwards, my skin didn’t feel as well nourished as usual. However I just got into the habit of doubling up my moisturiser and that worked really well with it. After three weeks of use my skin felt smoother and looked brighter. Although can’t comment on improved collagen, etc at this point, as I suspect I would need to trial it a bit longer to start noticing that.

The Harley Medical Group Replenishing Exfoliator
This exfoliator set is very similar in concept to one by another a luxury brand that I’ve been using recently (although I should mention it is about half the price!). It’s a set of two parts, Microderm Crystals (step one) and a Microderm Activator (step two).  It claims to deliver “collagen into the skin resulting in a firmer regenerated skin tone. The stable Vitamin C derivative and Beta carotene both powerful anti-oxidants help to promote collagen formation whilst the natural bamboo exfoliator, gently removes dead skin cells leaving smoother softer skin”.

I’ve only used this product three times (once a week), and always follow it with an intensive moisturising mask. You exfoliate your (clean) skin with the Microderm Crystals for upto two minutes, then apply the Microderm Activator on top, massaging in, till it transforms in to a white foam/paste.

I love the thorough exfoliating this product does, but be careful if you’re skin is very sensitive as there is a good chance you could over exfoliate. Instead of going at it for the full two minutes, I gently exfoliate with the Microderm Crystals (step one) for only a minute, then follow with the Activator. This technique worked well for my very sensitive eczema prone skin without irritating it.

As it is quite strong, I personally wouldn’t use it more than once a week, however my skin is always glowy and super smooth the next day after using it so it’s great for prepping skin before a big night out or a special occasion!

And so..
Overall I do really like this range, the prices vary from being quite expensive (the Anti-Ageing Youth Serum) to very reasonable (the Replenishing Exfoliator) but all of the products are of noticeably good quality. I am absolutely going to stick at the Anti-Ageing Youth Serum and can’t wait to see what my skin will be like in six months time, and despite not being a fan of face washes in general – the Gentle Cleanser is without a doubt my favourite face wash to date! A lovely promising taster of the range, making me eager to see (and try!) the other additions out there!

Benefit Cha Cha Tint!

I have been dying to try Benefit Cha Cha Tint since its release so was delighted when I was given one in a goody bag at a recent event. Already a huge fan of Posietint, and to a slightly lesser degree the original Benetint, I had high expectations for the coral/orange tint that has been touted as a great compliment for my warm skin tone.

As with the other two tints, it comes in a nail varnish style bottle, and is applied straight from the brush (a couple of blobs onto cheeks/lips, then blend!). Over my regular foundation (MAC Face & Body) it blended perfectly, and even when applied over powder products there was no streaking. One of the great things with all Benefit’s tints are that you don’t have to be super quick to blend once you’ve applied it; you can even leave it a few seconds and it still never over saturates in any places. What do you think? The more powder products you wear underneath, the less dewy it is but generally it does give a gorgeous shiny tint to the skin. You can also build it up if you so wish, to deepen the colour.

Like the other two tints, the lasting power is amazing. Ever so slightly less on the lips, but still really decent! I wouldn’t feel this is a product I would need to carry out with me for touch ups on the cheeks, but maybe for the lips..

Love this Benefit Cha Cha Tint, think it’s a fab coral that is actually more wearable for all skin tones then some would imagine. I actually find it surprisingly less orange than I thought it would be. I think I still prefer Posietint colour wise, as it really is a gorgeous pink that I just love, but this is a great alternative if you want your make-up to look less dolly and more natural.

Benefit Cha Cha Tint is available from Benefitcosmetics.co.uk, priced £24.50.

Diet Coke and Benefit PromotionWhilst I’m on the subject of Benefit, Diet Coke are currently running a promotion where if you buy selected (specially designed zebra print!) cans  of Diet Coke you’re entitled to £5 off your next £20 spend at Benefitcosmetics.co.uk.  This basically works out the same as getting free shipping, or if you’re super smart and have a couple of things you’re already after, why not spend over £40 on the website (which gets you free shipping automatically) and then use the Diet Coke promotional code for the further £5 off! Benefit goodies delivered straight to your doorstep with a little extra discount as a bonus. Promotion valid till 18/03/2012, so grab ‘em while you can!

Am I Desperate Scousewife??

This has in no way been intentional, it must have happened in the worst form of osmosis ever,  but whilst observing a recent episode of Desperate Scousewives I realised there were a few trends that my very Londoner self has apparently embraced! Don’t panic, they’re fairly minor – no walking around the high street in a full head of rollers or anything  - but still, there’s no denying the connotations involved.

Black Short Square NailsYep, I had a phase of doing the oval recently but now I realise I like my nails short(ish) and square, and black seems to be the colour of choice. In my defence it is Winter so it’s kinda season appropriate but I guess I could mix it up a bit with a larger variant of darker colours. I think the reason I am particularly loving black nails on me so much is because I believe I have found The Perfect Black.  Prior that a black nail never looked that great on my hand, but this gorgeous deep, inky ‘Black Taxi’ from Nails Inc is the most flattering black I’ve ever tried, and now I’m a convert.

Only downside to the polish is that it chips quite quickly, as with most Nails Inc polishes, but hey, a good top coat should help remedy that..

The Scouse BrowEugh, I’m even using their self-made terminology here.. But since discovering the BEST eyebrow palette I have become an even bigger fan of the heavily defined, full brow. In fairness I had always liked that look, I have a real dislike for razor thin, over plucked eyebrows, but I don’t think I have ever been able to carry it off so well in the past as I was lacking the equipment to make it actually look good and not garish. This HD Eyebrow and Eye Palette is a God send. I started using only one shade of the palette to begin with, the taupey colour, but now I have become bolder and started mixing it in with the darkest colour to achieve a really strong, full brow.I’m not gonna lie, I love this look on me and will not be shamed into thinking otherwise.

So there you have it, two products I am all over right now with some questionable (unintentional!) trend heritage!

New Over Knee Boots!

Ah, the boots fiasco.. How I lovingly look back at this memory now..

Those who follow me on twitter probably know all about the lengths I travelled to to get my greedy obsessive clutches on a pair of these boots in a size 3. It took me all the way to Reading and back, and I have to say Miss Selfridge customer services did not help me at all! After telling me initially, three weeks ago when I first spotted these shoes and decided I had to have them (they were sold out in my size), that they would order more in and to keep checking the website, I then saw, after checking the website every day for three weeks, that they had not ordered any more sizes in and in fact they had reduced the boots to half price in the sale! I was livid.

So I called the customer services up again (partly to shout at them, I admit), they pretty much sent me on a wild goose chase which involved calling stores all over England asking them to do a store transfer to a more local one (which Miss Selfridge no longer even do) and in the end, after spending SO MUCH TIME doing my damndest in getting a pair I decided enough was enough and travelled all the way to Reading, on a Saturday morning, to pick one of the last remaining pairs in the country up. Whew. And relax. Yes, it was a very stressful period for me, but it only goes to prove one of my favourite sayings ever which is, ‘where there’s a will, there’s a way!’.

Some shots of them on..Yes, I suppose I should do a full length one of me standing in them but I haven’t yet (I will edit this in), so please bear with me till then.

Do you think they were worth the hassle? I’m not so sure, for starters they’re too big (I expected this though, my size is 2½ and doesn’t really exist anywhere) and quite tricky to walk in but had I never have gotten them I would have thought about them regrettably till the day I died! I know what I’m like, see.
