The new Gillette Venus ProSkin range is something that my teenage self could desperately have done with. Not many people realise this about me or could ever detect it now, but when I was younger I had REALLY bad eczema. So bad, that if I was to shave my legs, say, three times a week, I’d suffer a flare up that would result in my scratching and scarring my legs raw. It wasn’t nice so I had to accept shaving was a no go for me. Weirdly, waxing was better, and eventually I discovered epilating which was the definitive answer to my problems for many years.
However, ten years on and my eczema is completely under control (touch wood!), and I can happily shave away without worry. There are some times (particularly underarm), where I feel, ‘Hmm, I need to watch that, feels like a shaving rash’, but generally I know my limits, the products I can use, the one’s I can’t, and thankfully haven’t suffered a flare up for years. As it happens, my go-to razor is a Gillette Venus one anyway (the Seabreeze, love it!)! Definitely my favourite as it leaves skin so smooth, with a nice strip of moisturising gel that really helps!
So back to the Gillette Venus ProSkin, whilst my skin is much, much better, this range really piqued my interest as it’s something that a lot of women out there might be looking for; women who are how like I used to be. Designed with three blades, spaced much closer together to avoid friction, and a moisturising strip it was meant to be a much kinder alternative for dry, sensitive skin than their traditional razors. But is it?
I was sent the razor pack along with the Gillette Satin Care Pure & Delicate shaving gel (and a few other bits, thanks you guys!) to try. I’m not going to talk about how easy it is to get out of the pack, etc, as if you’re interested in buying this it won’t be because of that element! Based on results, having used the foam and razor together, I did achieve a really good, close shave. Weirdly, without the foam (as the blades have a moisturising strip), I wasn’t as happy with the results and felt my legs were more nourished and smoother with using it.
So what’s my verdict? Bearing in mind it’s meant to be a more gentle shave for dryer, sensitive skins I didn’t get as close a shave as I did with my regular Venus razors, however it was still pretty close. After weeks of use I suffered no flare ups, and skin felt smooth and soft. I did find the moisture strip dried up a little quicker than with my other razorblades, so maybe in general you need to replace these more often? However if your skin can’t handle a normal razor, I’d definitely recommend that you check these out and see how you get on, as it could open the door to a world of shaving without irritation!
