Woo hoo! There is officially a week left of Ramadan now, I’m so proud of myself that I’ve made it this far without falling off the wagon (in every sense). If you’re interested in my reasons at all for doing it, or maybe you’re unaware of what it is, check out this story I wrote for xoJane here, I also wrote this one on female rapists (oooooo, controversial!).
Seeing as I’ve not been going out in a bid to lead a sinless life (see Ramadan above), I’ve picked up my Ukulele again that I bought months ago but never really learnt to play. Back then I found it so hard that I decided my only option was to book in professional lessons and classes, which I still haven’t got round to doing yet. For some reason since picking it up again in the last few days I seem to have a better affinity for it; it just seems to be coming a bit easier for me this time, and I’m really enjoying it. Hours pass playing and only feel like ten minutes. YouTube tutorials have been a God send, I really recommend them immensely to everyone considering learning to play. I haven’t learnt a great deal but I can now play (albeit not brilliantly!) Hurt by Johnny Cash, Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley and parts of Someone like you by Adele. Must admit some of the chords have been tricky with my long fingernails but I’m forcing myself to get over this; if Dolly Parton can do it, so can I (yeah I know she plays the guitar but same thing, sorta..)!

FYI, I’m aware the Cash and Buckley songs weren’t originally done by them, but their versions are the ones I’ve learnt!

Wrote a (long!) comment on your Ramadan article, but just wanted to say happy Ramadan and that I love Hurt and Hallelujah and am intrigued to hear ukelele versions! A friend of mine played Stone Roses’ Sally Cinnamon on his mandolin for me once and it was the most charming rendition I’d ever heard of a super-sweet song. Learning to play music seems like a wonderful thing to do in this month. x
Aww, saw your comment, it was lovely! Thank you! Yep, learning the Uke is definitely a nice way to spend all this free time.. Once I get a little better I might start putting my Uke covers on youtube! So hopefully you’ll get a chance to hear them then..

Just wondering, whats the story on you doing Ramadan? Are you muslim? Just reallyy curious as it says the page can’t be found when I click on the article to explain!
Sorry! xx
