A/W trend: Dark, dark vamp lips…

First off, apologies for the lack of posts this week. My sister is getting married in a couple of weeks and I have had soo much to do in help with prep for the big day (anyone feel like writing 400 wedding invitations??), and also it’s been Ramadan so my energy has been pretty low. But anyway, whilst in in my Ramadan seclusion (I hardly go out at all during this holy month) I’ve managed to keep an eye on the trends for Autumn/Winter this year, and something I’ve noticed cropping up in every A/W make-up collection and on all the hippest of celebs is dark, vampish lips. This can vary from a deep red to an almost black purple, and can be glossy or matte. I personally am all over the dark purples right now, although admittedly it is quite hard to wear. Here are two [new] lipsticks, Nars Pure Matte in Volga and Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Perle in Mesmerizing Purple, that have launched recently which are BANG on trend to recreate this look.

I think it’s really important that if you are going to rock this trend to accompany it with a few other major make-up trends for fall or else you could risk looking overdone and contradicting the look entirely.

These other trends are:

  • No mascara (I know, it’s a toughie)
  • Natural/bare eyelids
  • Strong, full, defined eyebrows
  • Lipliner for perfect lipstick (lipliner is FINALLY back!!)

Your base should ideally be matte, but not cakey or too heavy (sorry, I can’t do matte so I’ve got semi matte here), and cheeks should remain colour free other than some honey or caramel sheen/shimmer. The entire face, bar lips, should pretty much be tones of nude and not heavy/caked in texture and finish. You basically should aim to look like you have a polished, verging on neutral/bare subtly sculpted face.

This YSL lipstick I have here is part of their new Rock & Baroque Autumn collection. It is actually the limited edition Autumn colour of a completely brand new lipstick range they’ve just launched, Rouge Volupte Perle. As the shade name suggests, Mesmerizing Purple is a deep, intense purple.

SNB15283

It’s a strange consistency, almost more greasy than glossy, but I love it. Especially in this particular shade. As the colour is such a deep, rich colour in a high pigmented sheer formula, you really need a lipliner to ‘keep’ the lipstick in place as without (damn, even with) it’s prone to smearing and spreading, but because it’s soooo beautiful on I think you can live with it being quite high maintenance.

I love the little pieces of glitter delicately speckled throughout it; it is an amazing evening lippie and looks great in evening light – the light really catches the shimmer and glitter!

Didn’t get round to doing my brows (or anything else for that matter!) in this pic as was getting ready to leave the house quickly and it was early daytime; the pics for Nars further below display more ‘statement’ brows, caramel shimmer cheeks, full Autumn trends, etc, in them.

This Nars lipstick is also part of a new lipstick collection recently launched called Pure Matte. I was lucky enough to be invited to visit their concession in Selfridges two days ago to have a lipstick matched for me out of the six shades forming this range. In all honesty, I probably could have taken all six of the shades home as they were all so gorgeous, but decided, despite how besotted I was with the ruby red, that this shade called Volga was definitely the one as it is perfect for the season (I might go back for the red).

SNB15608x

It’s an interesting colour, a mixture of maroon and purple. VERY dark on, but can also be worn more subtly if you don’t want to go too vamp. It’s a matte texture, and your lips seriously need to be in good condition to work this; any hint of a flake and it is amplified tenfold. Again, a lipliner to line the lips and also to deepen the colour on the centre of the lip (where the lipstick is harder to apply as it is water resistant) is required.

SNB15954

Here I have ‘statement’ full, groomed brows, no mascara, bare eyelids, caramel shimmer cheeks (actually a bit too much caramel shimmer here!), [semi] matte base to contrast with the dark lips.

It’s a real matte, strong, heavy statement lip. Classic but edgy.

I love both of these lipsticks, even though they are technically part of the same trend they are completely different in my eyes as one is glossy and sheer whilst the other is super matte and heavy. At the moment I am probably leaning towards the YSL Mesmerizing Purple as I love the decadence of the gloss and glitter, so perfect for evenings out and teamed with the blackish purple shade it is divine. However the matte maroon/berry shade from Nars (Volga) is also beautiful and very striking.. Eek, don’t make me choose! One thing I do know is that I’m am definitely going to get lots of wear out of both of them.

YSL Rouge Volupte Perle No106 Mesmerizing Purple is priced at £24 and is limited edition, Nars Pure Matte in Volga is priced at £18 and is currently exclusive to Selfridges, both are available to purchase now.

No7 Autumn Limited Edition Collection: Smoky Eyeliner and Soft Matte Finish Lipstick in Nude

Here are a couple of pieces from the No7 Autumn collection that is currently on sale now till October 5th. The products I’m reviewing here are the highly anticipated Smoky Eyeliner and the Soft Matte Finish Lipstick in Nude, both limited edition alongside the rest of the Autumn collection.

Smoky Eyeliner, £9.50

SNB14309

Oooh, I do love a smokey eye! It’s my ‘go to’ make-up look whenever I can’t be bothered to be imaginative (so pretty often, basically). I’m always really interested in any magical products that claim to simplify this sometimes difficult to achieve look – often smokey eye products, similar in design to this one by No7, are hit or miss. There’s a massive issue with product fall out and general blendibility, amongst many other things. However I am pleased to report, having tried and tested this product religiously for a few months now, that this is one of the good ones.

SNB14311x

The product comes in a tube full of finely milled loose powder, that is pressed inside it, with a slender foam applicator that you use to apply the product straight to your eye. Applying it super easy, you simply line your eyes, lower and upper lash line, and then blend accordingly.

I think this product is amazing, the first time I used it gave me gorgeous feline cat eyes without even getting to the blending out part (so flexible). All I used was a little more of this product on the outer side off my lid, after lining the lower and upper lash line, and blended (with the No7 Smoky Eyes brush which is brilliant, by the way) and my smokey eye look was complete! A little liner added on the waterline (didn’t use this product for that, wouldn’t advise to either as this product is essentially a powder) and I had achieved pretty kitten-like smokey eyes! Amazing.

No7 Smoky Eyeliner and Smoky Eyeliner Brush

I did find that I would have to touch up and reapply it a few times throughout the day, but largely just to freshen up the colour – on paler skins you may not need to do this but I prefer a more intense smokey look than subtle. Occasionally, I do get some product fall out if I’m careless when applying it, but generally there is a technique that you’ll get used to when using this product. Just basically be a little careful and don’t work the applicator too hard, don’t push down on the applicator to get a deeper colour if the colour wears thin, instead re-dip the applicator and continue gently applying. THAT’S the trick to avoiding fall out! And a quick tap of the applicator to get rid of excess product before starting on the eyes certainly doesn’t hurt.

Sometimes, I do add some black eyeshadow and other products in conjunction with this smokey eye product, to really give myself an intense evening smokey eye. But in general, this product and a kohl eyeliner is really all I’d need for a fabulous fool-proof day time look (bearing in mind, most folk would probably be happy using my day time look for their evening!). Honestly, anyone could use this! Even without any skill previously in smokey eyes or blending, simply lining your eyes with this is enough to achieve a smokey matte look, the foam applicator you apply it with softens the line to some degree anyway!

SNB13941x

This picture was actually taken on the first day I wore it; all I’ve got on here alongside it is some kohl eyeliner on the waterline and mascara! And I remember literally applying it in 5 minutes before leaving the house!

The Smoky Eyeliner is priced at £9.50 which I do actually think is a good investment for this product, especially if you have struggled in the past achieving smokey eyes or want a subtle smokey eye look. I honestly doubt you’ll be disappointed with this. My only major fault with it is that it’s limited edition!! Whaaaaaaaa! Please bring it out as a basic range product! And don’t get me started on how desirable it’d be in a whole host of colours, oh my..

Soft Matte Finish Lipstick in Nude, £9.75

SNB14939

No7 have also 2 new lipsticks out for Autumn, a Deep Plum, and a Nude which I’m reviewing here.

SNB14937

I really like this lippy, I find it’s a great pinky nude that works really well with strong eyes. It is matte but also quite creamy, so not too drying. Having said that, the lasting power isn’t amazing and I did find myself reapplying often. However being a nude it’s so easy to reapply; a simple swipe sans mirror is often enough to keep it in tact when on the go! It wasn’t one of those lipsticks that looked appalling if not perfectly applied.

SNB15219

It’s priced at £9.75, similar to most No7 lipsticks and I do think this is probably quite steep for a high street product – you can pick a MAC one up for only a couple of quid more and I do prefer their lipstick formulas to this. However, it is a great shade and I have been wearing it a lot since I received it two weeks ago! The colour is very beautiful and brightening to the face, unlike most nudes on me.

Both of these products are limited edition and only available till October 5th, so if you want them you best be quick! You can pick them up from Boots stores, and also online here (www.boots.com).

Yves Saint Laurent Autumn ‘Rock & Baroque’ Collection and New Releases…

Ahh, I don’t like to play favourites with my press samples but I do get very excited when the YSL seasonal collection lands on my doorstep. The gold packaging is just so damn pretty and everything looks so luxurious you can’t help but gush! The weather has been crappy over here (we decided to skip Summer) so I am more than in the mood to start dressing (and making-up) for Autumn, perfect timing really!

SNB152544

I just got these TODAY and think they’re amazing so couldn’t resist a few swatches to tide you over before I get on to the full reviews.

Rock & Baroque

Rock & Baroque is the Autmn/Fall YSL collection this year. What I have featured here is not the entire collection, just a few bits I picked out for myself.

Rouge Volupte Perle Silky-Sensual Radiant Lipstick

SNB15278

Rouge Volupte Perle is the brand new lipstick collection currently consisting of 6 shades to join their permanent range. One of the shades is a limited edition colour for ‘Rock & Baroque’, No106 Mesmerizing Purple. These lipsticks are quite glossy, but also pigmented despite the majority of the subtle shades in the collection. However they are still glossy lipsticks so you won’t get the same coverage you would from a matte lipstick, they’re just not as sheer as you might expect them to be (the Mesmerizing Purple is actually pretty deep! Not for the faint hearted.). They’re also very subtly shimmered.

The shades I have are No102 Coral Sun, No104 Stella Pink and the limited edition shade No106 Mesmerizing Purple (which looks more brown than purple in the pics but trust me, it’s a gorgeous blackish purple in reality!).

Peche No1: L’Elcat Collector Powder for the Complexion

SNB15290

SNB15320

This is a powder you use on top of your base to give a glow and a halo of radiance… It’s not to take place of your powder (you can use it on top) but you possibly might want to use this instead of a bronzer for Winter. It’s just a radiance boosting finishing product for all over the face.

YSL have also got the Manicure Couture range for Autumn which is gorgeous! You can buy two mini duos for £24 and can use both to do either your tips or entire nail so you’re not limited to one look! I love the black and gold design (or is it dark purple and gold?), which is No1 Belle Du Jour.

New Basic Products

YSL are also bringing out a couple of new shades of their current basic range for September.

Blush Variation Variation Blush in No19 Venetian Rose

SNB15326

A new shade of the Blush Variations, mixed together I felt it gave a pearly pink shade, but haven’t tested it on my face yet so don’t take my word for it. I’m sure the bronze will show more when applied properly.

Ombre Solo Lasting-Radiance Smoothing Eye Shadow

SNB15255

A new eyeshadow range that promises vibrant colour with fabric like texture. 13 shades in total (two of which to come out in September, the rest are out now!).

I chose No1 Midnight Black, No2 Cashmere Brown, No3 Persian Blue and No8 Fawn.

SNB15314

I’ve only swatched these so far but I love the sparkle in them! Very subtle but still enough to be glamorous without looking trashy. Midnight Black looks a little green in the pics but in reality it is a truer black. Fawn doesn’t show too clearly on my hand but that’s because it matches my skin tone too well and I suspect will make a great nuetral peachy eye shade (which is why I chose it!).

Teint Radiance Radiance Enhancing Foundation

And lastly, they have a brand spanking new foundation! Due out in September, this foundation is aimed to be natural looking but with good coverage, making you look naturally flawless. It contains super fine mica so it catches the light and works with your skin tone while its light silicone formula allows it to sit softly on the surface of the skin without drying, wearing away or being affected by perspiration and sebum, resulting in a fresh looking face throughout the day.

I got a shade 10 Cinnamon (there are 11 shades in total) as I own a couple of YSL foundations already and 9 or 10 are the best matches for my skin tone (for your reference I am a MAC NC42 and Giorgio Armani 8). I’ve just tried this on and have to say, it’s very natural looking! But not weak on the coverage either. It’s so light weight on the skin it really feels (and looks) like you have no base on as it mimics the skin texture amazingly – it just makes you look like you have great skin! I have dry skin generally and whilst this isn’t dewy like I’d usually go for, it’s not too matte either and there’s definitely a glow. Although I would probably need more than the suggested 2 pumps to get the coverage I prefer – maybe 4 pumps in total?

SNB15368

You’ll have to wait for my full review on this before I’m happy committing to an opinion, but so far I have to admit I’m quite impressed with how comfortable it is to wear – really feels like my skin has nothing on! The colour is a teeny bit too red but that’s because I’m a ridiculous inbetween colour (with literally every foundation, not just YSL). Have high hopes for this foundation.

So that’s all the new goodies you have to look forward to from YSL! First impressions? Full reviews coming sooon, let me know if there’s anything you want reviewed straight away and I’ll get testing on that first.
