Weekly update featuring GlossyBox & Harrods, Pixi, Clippy London and more..

Thought I’d do a weekly update instead of bi-monthly as this week is pretty quiet for me in terms of exciting blogging stuff, and last week.. well, wasn’t!First up, what most people have been writing loads about is the Harrods collaboration with GlossyBox this month! If you haven’t got your boxes already, or bizarrely haven’t read up on what to expect, this is what was inside mine…Narciso Rodriguez for her EDP
YSL Forever Youth Liberator Serum
Molton Brown Heavenly Gingerlily Moisture Bath & Shower
Burberry Miniature Lip Mist in Copper No. 202
Ojon Damage Reverse Instant Restorative Hair Serum

I LOVE my Burberry Lipstick, I hear there were two types you can get but I think I lucked out with my one! Also, the Narciso Rodriguez fragrance is gorgeous – I bought that for my Mum once a few years back, so lovely! Actually appreciate this sample size as it’s a fragrance I really like. Generally an all-round decent box, could have done without the Molton Brown sample but the other products more than make up for it.I just want to add how DELICIOUS the catering was at the GlossyBox Harrods launch, selected from Harrods’ Laduree – this blows the usual event cupcakes out of the water! I actually am not a fan of cupcakes, or sweet things in general (maybe with a cup of tea but not on their own), however I could easily eat this entire tray in one sitting. Nomnomnom..Prior that event I popped into Pixi for the launch of another collaboration, this time between Pixi and Disney! The Pixi Disney Tinkerbell range consists of a lip and eye palette, eye shadow stick, eye liner, lip tint, nail varnish and glitter dust all encased in cutesy Disney inspired packaging! From first impressions I heart the eye/lip palette and fluoro nail varnish most, but this could change once I’ve had a play around!I also got a FANTABULOUS (that mean fantastic and fabulous, btw) dip dye at Lisa Shepherd in London. If you haven’t read about that, you can read about it here. Still over the moon about it..

Don’t forget, readers of my blog can get a nice 25% discount from treatment price if they quote Make Up to Make Out when booking! You also get a free shampoo and conditioner too! Details in the post about it here..Clippy London also kindly sent me some lovely bits because I had lost my make-up bag at Fashion Week and they were offering it as a replacement. Admittedly, I did find my make-up bag again but you can never have too many, eh? I’m always switching and mixing mine up. Alongside the make-up bags I also got some other really useful products like a cool ‘Phone Home’ (a home for your phone!) and antique pink leather purse, so will cover all of these things soon – really, really love them all so far! Finally, Whooga sent me what has been independently rated as the most comfiest uggs out there.. And I agree! I haven’t worn them out yet, but I’ve been wearing them around the house as a form of slippers and they are oh sooo comfy. It’s been really chilly and rainy the last few days so have really appreciated the extra warmth. I already have some EMU uggs and will agree that these Whooga’s are definitely cosier and warmer!

They fit nice and snug too – I’m wearing a size 3 here which actually fits well for the style of boot, a little roomy in the foot but nice on the leg. However if you have really diddy feet they even do kid sizes that go up to 2.5!They also have a good, thick sole so none of that horrible side overhang so common with girls who probably wear their uggs too much – you know what I mean, don’t you? It’s like the sole has completely disappeared and the inside side of the boot has collapsed over it. Hate that. By looking at the soles on these Whooga’s uggs they looks like they’ll provide good support!

I also saw The Muppets. :) Awww, it was great fun. Definitely recommend it! Lots of slebs so worth a watch if you just like films with lots of cameos.. Although good in its own right even without the slebs!

So that’s been my week.. :)

Got Dip Dyed!!!

Had an amazing day today (or yesterday, I’m writing this very late at night). Not only did I potentially find the best eyebrow threading place (Hena, in Finchley – have only been once so far so bear in mind I might have just been lucky!), but I also got a fantastic dip dye at Lisa Shepherd in London!! AND, the Director of the salon (who, btw, has styled BOTH the Olsens) was the one to enrich my locks!!

Have a look at the little video of it all happening.. (thank you Charlotte for filming!)

The idea behind this dip dye was to have a more wearable, less harsh version than a lot of the DIY jobs people are sporting at the moment. There’s nothing wrong with that look – I actually really like it! But it doesn’t suit everyone, most brunettes would really struggle pulling off an at home dip dye. For a more sophisticated, blended look that is far more versatile for different skintones this version at Lisa Shepherd is definitely better.

I have had my hair dip dyed previously, if you remember this post here, and whilst I loved it back then I really wanted something more statement this time – but still well blended and without clashing against me. My main concern was for it not to be brassy or clash with my skin.Well, I definitely got what I wanted! It actually exceeded my expectations and I’m so thrilled with it. It looks great all shiny but I can imagine it looking awesome all surf hair-y too! What I discovered was the general rule for Asian skintones was to not let the bleached colour come up too high so it’s directly against your face – that’s the main trick to fighting the clash! If you’re interested in getting a dip dye like this (or not like this, exactly, like in a similar cool way but for your own hair), I have an exclusive offer for readers of this blog! When calling in to book your treatment (and it can be any treatment – not just a  colour one!), quote Make Up to Make Out and get 25% off final treatment price PLUS a free shampoo and conditioner! Pretty damn good, eh? Call Lisa Shepherd now on 0207 467 9560.

Do you guys love it as much as I do???

Dear Lina… Which Hair Dye?

I got an email through today that inspired me to start up a new ‘column’ within Make to Make Out, which I have creatively titled ‘Dear Lina’. I do get quite a few emails from readers asking about certain things I use or buy or just general beauty/fashion advice, so I figured instead of responding to each and every one personally, I will simply answer it here! That way it will also help anyone else with the same queries.

So to kick start this new column, here’s the email I received today:
Hii..
I don’t know how is it possible but I’ve used the same red color on my hair (LIVE Luminance – Infra red) and then the same brown color (Clairol – light ash brown) on it as you.. After this it was like really dark brown with red reflections and I didn’t really like it so I’ve decided to go back to my natural light brown.. I dyed it twice(!!!) with really light brown so it was supposed to be much lighter but it’s still THE SAME!
I just can’t get rid of this color and I’m desperate because I don’t know how.. Could you help me somehow? Do you still have the same color? Thank you very much!!

I surprisingly get a lot of questions regarding my hair colour so I’m glad this is my first ‘Dear Lina’ post!  Firstly, before I go into what products I used to create my hair colour, to solve this problem I would recommend washing your hair regularly with a strong shampoo that will help strip the colour out. Apparently, dandruff shampoos like Head & Shoulders are great for this. Maybe each time you wash your hair, lather and rinse three times with the shampoo to speed up the colour stripping process. I personally would stop adding any further colour for now and let the other dyes wash out a little.

If you really can’t wait for the colour to fade gradually… You can buy product that strip/remove colour out of hair in one application. I’ve never used a product like this but after a (very!) quick search via google found this oneColourB4. Hair Colour remover by Scott Cornwall, which should give you an idea of what you’re looking for. A product like this will literally take all the hair colourant out, but unfortunately what you’re left with is not your natural colour if lightening has been involved.  The end colour will probably be slightly orangey and brassy as the Schwarzkopf dye has a little bit of bleach within it (that’s how it lightens dark hair). However once you’ve stripped the colour out that way, you can then colour over it with your natural light brown colour.

FYI, FOR MY HAIR COLOUR..

I firstly used a Japanese brand hair dye called Palty, and the shade was Juicy Peach. You might be able to find these dyes in your local Asian supermarket but otherwise search eBay! This lightened my hair a great deal, but wasn’t as red as I had hoped for so I THEN went over it with this Schwarzkopf Live Luminance in Infrared (L42). This worked really well with my hair and I was very happy with the look I had created with the two dyes.Schwarzkopf Live Luminance Infrared L42 (November-January 2010/11)

I was then offered to do a sponsored post for Clairol, where I used their new Nice ‘n Easy Colour Blend Foam in 6A Light Ash Brown. This covered my hair nicely, gave it a good blanket colour but you could still see a little of the red coming through..Clairol Nice ‘n Easy Colour Blend Foam 6A Light Ash (January-June 2011)

THEN

I kept my hair like that for a while, and when I had about an inch worth of roots I decided to step up my hair dye quality to salon professional product. So I was using salon professional product at homeI DO NOT ADVISE YOU ALSO DO THIS. I had researched a lot about colouring hair at home, and discovered that in order to achieve the results I wanted, the off-the-shelf stuff just wasn’t going to cut it. So I swatted up on what was needed, what was safe to use, and ordered some L’Oreal Excel Hi-Color Red Hot and L’Oreal Oreor Cream 40 Developer. Following the instructions, I mixed and applied the correct amount of product to my hair to achieve this:L’Oreal Excel Hi-Colour in Red Hot (June-November 2011)

The colour was quite dark to begin with, but faded beautifully. After about a month of having dyed it, my hair was a lovely copper-ish red. I loved the colour so much I was hesitant to use anything else over it, despite the roots showing through quite obviously. I genuinely believe it was the combination of all the products that resulted in the faded out colour I loved so much!

NOW

Very recently (like two weeks ago), I went to a salon and got a slight variation of Ombre hair done (which was actually for a guest feature for Grazia Daily). And that is my hair now. :)

Hope this clears it up somewhat.

If you would like your question/query answered in the next ‘Dear Lina’, simply drop me an email at lina@makeuptomakeout.co.uk, titled ‘Dear Lina’, and I’ll work on getting an answer for you!

Clairol Nice’n Easy Colour Blend Foam Hair Colour

Following on from my previous post about how I dyed my hair red, check out the colour I am now (as of last night!) using Clairol Nice’n Easy Colour Blend Foam Hair Colour..

My ‘before’ vid.. I look awful here, wasn’t feeling my best and man does it show, haha..

I’ve never used a foam dye before so the experience was quite unique, it feels so light that you almost worry if you’re applying it right, but yes you are. It just fizzes down into a more liquid consistency once onto the hair. I would suggest still laying down rags or newspaper on the floor as there was a little dripping still but if you’re careful this should be minimal.

Voila! The results!

So, what do you think? It’s nice that I can finally wear strong lipstick again without it clashing, something I’ve started to enjoy pretty much instantly since the hair change! So interesting how a slight change in hair colour really effects the rest of your make-up..

I call her Red..

SNB17693x

Here’s a super duper quick post on the hair dye I’ve used to get the red tint my hair is currently sporting. I know I’ve had a few comments on it asking what brand, type, etc so here are the full details.

SNB17702x

The colour chart..

It’s Schwarzkopf Live Luminance Lightening Colourant in L42 Infra Red. I got mine from Superdrug for about a fiver and the colour has lasted quite well actually. It’s especially for dark hair as it contains a teeny bit of bleach alongside the dye so it effectively lightens and colours your hair at the same time in one step, which is pretty handy as it means we don’t have to faff around with pre-lightening our hair first or anything.

Some stills I captured from a vid post I made (to show my hair colour)..

Strawberry Fudgex

It’s a funny dye, I always notice that a few days after I’ve washed my hair the colour looks far more vibrant, but on the actual day I wash my hair it tends to look a little washed out.. weird. Like it comes to life after a while or something!

Today has been quite exciting as my dad said he found something in his car, and would you believe it was my camera that I had lost since October! Madness! I was seriously starting to think it was a gone-a and was already shopping around for a replacement. I will still be doing my video posts but man, it’s so easy just taking a few pics and writing something up instead recording, editing and eurgh, uploading onto bastard You Tube (this part has sometimes taken me over 12 hours for a relatively short vid!). So yeah, loving the ease of blogging with my trusty camera back!

I think next week on my blog is gonna be Filofax week, providing the damn things ever arrive! For those who have been living under a rock, #filofaxclub has taken over the beauty world on Twitter via myself and few other beauty bloggers and we are all rather a little obsessed. Check out the Facebook page we set up HERE and take part in the stationary porn fun!
