Initally, I have to admit having openly vocalised my dislike for glosses of late I was a little hesitant about the rustic metallic shade labelled “Extreme Sheen” that laid infront of me, but this wouldn’t deter me from giving it the fairest go I could in regards to someone who would choose a gloss this strong!
What Hourglass say:
“This water-resistant lip gloss comes in a range of pretty shades. It has a brush applicator, ensuring it glides on smoothly and evenly. It smells delicious, as lip glosses should. It doesn’t come off when you have a drink or lick your lips and stays shiny for longer than most glosses we’ve tried!”
Application
It comes with a brush applicator, and I believe it would work better as a finishing product than the lone lip product. I would ideally wear this with a lip liner and a lipstick, and then finish off with this. However, for these pics I only used this as my sole lip product, so you can see its colour and texture and pigment to its full extent. And as a sole lip product that was such a strong shade, I found the brush a little tiny and awkward to get a nice precise line with – hence why I mentioned it would work much better on an already lined mouth.
Verdict
This is only a ‘so far’ verdict, as I don’t like giving my final opinion on something until I’ve worn it out a few times and tested it against all the elements – drinking, eating, talking, etc. However, as a so far verdict it is certainly more wearable than I was expecting. I’m really not into a strong glossy red mouth, especially something that is a rustier red, like this. If I have to go down the route of gloss, it would be soft pinks, oranges and so on. Natural shades. But as you will see from the pictures there are tiny flecks of glitter in there, which provide a dazzling finish to the gloss that I have to admit is very appealing coupled with the intense shade, and although this can cause it to feel a little bitty when you first apply it, this feeling wears off after a while.

The selling point of this gloss is that it is water resistant, so I suppose against water itself it won’t budge but if you are wearing it as strong as I have, and as strong as the ad campaign wears it, the simple pressing action of your lips against a glass, you tongue licking you lips undoubtedly causes some wipe off from the sheer pressure/friction despite being waterproof – it didn’t stay perfect through one cup of green tea, although, far from gone which is promising. You are still left with a fair amount of colour and (surprisingly) a cleanish outline – I was most worried about this looking messy all around my lip line after some time, but that wasn’t the case. It simply fades in colour, but in an attractive, moisturised way.
Of course, this is all in regard to the gloss being worn on singularly, and quite strongly. I am positive (and will be testing this out soon!) that with a lined mouth and some lippy and then this on top it will keep your lips looking fresh and glossy for a long while, with little wear. Alternatively, a few dabs smudged in all over the lips to give a subtle look will probably be the most beneficial for long lasting wear, and I actually think this will be a much more wearable for day to day wear, which conveniently also looks quite pretty too! I will be updating with more pics to illustrate both these points(!).
Overall it’s a good gloss if this type of product and colour is your bag, I’m still in midst conclusion and will update in a few days my final verdict but I do think it’s a good quality product. My lips do feel incredibly soft and not dryer (key point!), even when the gloss is starting to wear away. I do personally think that some of the other shades, despite still being a high shine gloss (so not me right now), would be beautiful on, and this gloss in quality, texture and pigment reminds me of Chanels.
Come back in a few days and I’ll let you know how it works in the long run with more pics! You can pick Hourglass lip glosses from Zuneta.com for £21.
