Some of you may have noticed the pastel hair trend of late. Whilst this looks great, most of us aren’t really ready for the commitment (or damage, in my case) of bleaching then dying our locks pastel. So instead I decided to recreate the trend in a more wearable way with clip-in hair extensions!
When I briefly mentioned on twitter about an upcoming feature on pastel hair a few weeks back some folk seemed a little surprised at the idea; you obviously failed to spot young Ashley Olsen back in September with pastel blue high-lights (those pesky Olsens, always ahead of the game, eh?)! Admittedly, I spotted but the idea didn’t really take for me till January this year. Anyway, because a few didn’t know of this trend I decided to throw in some pics to enlighten you all on what we’re trying to achieve here. Lest not forget the fashion blogging queen herself, Tavi (on the left)… Photo: Google Images and Vogue.com I decided the look I was going to aim for was pastel pink streaks, similar to the blonde in the very first picture and Ashley Olsen (but obviously using pink, not blue streaks), and the clip-ins I am using to do this are Love Hair Extensions Thermo-Fibre Clip-ins in Baby Pink. As with all love hair extensions clip-ins, you section your hair (in my case, fairly low down), back comb the sectioned area slightly then clip in the weft! Simple as that! I should add that I did some serious thinning and trimming of the weft beforehand so it’d look more like streaks than a blanket of pink, as I was aiming for a high-light/streaked look. Here you can see where I clipped it in.. The section is completely covered with hair. What do you think? The flash on my camera really washes out the pink – sorry!
Yikes! I need to trim the ends a little neater! For this trend you either need really mousy hair or dry, bleached, damaged hair to offset the pastel colour. I have neither, and despite it looking okay in the pics I think in future I will either crimp my hair or use lots of mattifying products to really give it texture and create a messed up look. The look I want to avoid is ‘rawk’ or goth chick (or God forbid; Techno Barbie), we’re thinking grunge here. Unfortunately my hair is naturally quite shiny, which is usually a good thing, but not when you spend most of your time trying to mess it up! I just quickly crimped it here to demonstrate how it could look more styled (ala Ashley Olsen), but this has been done suuuper quick so please don’t judge me too harshly on it! Doesn’t crimping your hair make your face look about a thousand times fatter? Urgh. I could have maybe have done with another weft placed higher.. Love Hair Extensions also do a few other pastel colours, including a very interesting pale green! Definitely have a look at what is out there, and if you can’t find the shade you desperately want (I originally had my heart set on a washed out blue), maybe try the silver/grey and dye it to the desired colour? I’m genuinely considering doing this. I’ve worn these clip-ins out and about and they stay in perfectly without any tugging or pulling. However, a word of warning; if your hair is the type that curls in the rain (like mine), in those situations you may end up with your own hair naturally curling while the clip-ins remain dead straight – horrific! These clip-ins were sent to me for review at my request, but you can pick them up from www.lovehairextensions.com. Lx
