Nars Fall Collection 2011

I recently attended a Nars press day for their Fall collection and other new releases. Despite all the gorgeous daring eye colours (take a look at the promo pic above), I played it relatively safe and left with two lipsticks from the collection. The shades/formulations I chose were Pure Matte Lipstick in Montego Bay, a gorgeous nudey pale pink, and Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Train Bleu – a very, very dark berry colour that is gonna be perfect Autumn/Winter evening affairs.Montego Bay in Pure Matte Lipstick (t0p) and Train Bleu in Velvet Matte Lip Pencil (bottom)

Train Bleu, in the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil- a formulation I’ve not tried until now, is really great for achieving striking vampy lips, you can layer this up till it’s practically black, and it’s quite easy to keep in place as you have the precision of it being a pencil still (with the coverage of a matte lipstick). However, be careful when out drinking as the centre of the lip wears ever so quickly away (use a straw!), as it’s tricky to apply the colour on a lip that has any moisture, AT ALL on it, you’ll need to blot crazily with a tissue prior application/touch ups to absorb any moisture and the product should adhere to the lip better. Texture is really creamy for such a matte product. The shade is particularly great for darkening a lipstick colour you already have, which is one of the reasons why I chose it.Train Bleu Velvet Matte Lip Pencil (left), Montego Bay Pure Matte Lipstick (right)

Unsurprisingly, I’ve been wearing Montego Bay more often than Train Bleu, in fact I actually haven’t stopped wearing it! It’s such a prettifying shade, and works perfectly with the super matte texture (super matter but still fairly non drying!). It really brightens without being over bearing and finishes your make-up in a really understated way, I love it. Whilst it may not be a unniversally flattering shade it will definitely suit a very wide spectrum of people. It’s great for day time, but also beautiful for evening if paired with a strong or smoky eye . So easy to wear, literally swipe on, smudge/rub your lips together and you’re good to go. Lasting power – AMAZE.

Here’a video from Grazia Online where they feature this lippy in creating the perfect nude lip.

Two other products that Nars had recently launched and were displaying at the event was the Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner (where again I was really boring and chose the straight black colour, Via Veneto), and the Concealer stick (I was colour matched Biscuit).I’ve only used the concealer a few times and whilst it’s good with covering up blemishes, I have found it a bit on the dry side. I think this concealer is meant to be really good for the under eye area as it claims to be crease resistant – I need to test this out more thorougly but generally I prefer my under eye concealers to have a little bit more give with blending. The Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner is really good, my all time favourite long wear eyeliner is Clinique’s Intense Quickliner but this is a great alternative – I’ve wear it on my waterline and it stays in place really well. It’s not an inky deep black, but I like this as sometimes you want a neat tight waterline, and this is perfect for creating that; I find it just gently defines. By the end of the day I can notice a teeeeny bit of smudging, but as I tend to wear it a little blended out and smokey, it actually works well with my look (am wearing it in pics above). The cool thing about these eyeliners are that even though they are mechanically winded up, they have a sharpener attached at the end so you can get the point of the pencil nice and sharp again!!

So these are all my new bits from Nars, what do you like best?

A box of delicious glossiness.. GlossyBox

Buying ‘lucky dip’ bags of stuff always appeals to me but seldom satisfies once the lot of hidden ‘treasures’ arrive. I often find myself wishing I just spent the money on getting one good thing I am guaranteed to like, rather than five random pieces that are apparently worth way more than you’re paying but you have no idea what they are (and usually dislike). In fairness, I’ve only done this once, and it was with jewellery. Every item I got in my ‘lucky dip’ bag was crap. So understandably I was a little dubious about what should arrive in my GlossyBox.

GlossyBox – Definition

A monthly box of five large sample sized high-end products, tailored for your individual skincare and beauty needs, sent directly to your door for £10 a month.

I genuinely thought it would just be products that were end of line, discontinued, etc. I certainly didn’t expect there to be much bang for your buck.

But have a look at what I got..

First of all, the packaging was gorgeous. Really beautiful attention to detail stuff making opening the GlossyBox a pure delight.

Blocked out me addy, init.

SNB10278

A box within a box!

SNB10279

Hints of gorgeousness..

SNB10280

Ahaha… WOW.

My goodness, I was honestly not expecting something(s) so fabulous to come out of this box. A FULL SIZE NARS ORGASM ILLUMINATOR AND DANIEL SANDLER LIPSTICK???!!!! Holy Moly! I think I’ve died and gone to GlossyBox heaven.

Needless to say, I’m thoroughly impressed with the contents of this box and for £10 it is money definitely well spent! If every box to come from GlossyBox is of the same calibre as this, I recommend signing up right now..

Nars ‘Sweet Disposition’ Multiples Set

Sweet-Disposition-Set

Photo: Google Images

Ah, I have to say that this set for Christmas bought out by Nars from their ‘Holiday’ collection caught my attention as soon as I saw it!

The Multiples, which I looove, in miniature form of three of their most iconic shades; Orgasm, Malibu and Luxor.

Check out my video below.. (I look awful, btw, ill AGAIN, arghhhhh! Damn you immune system!).

This set is actually priced at £32 – not £25 as I stated.

As far as I know, Malibu is the bronzer shade, Orgasm is the blusher and Luxor is the highlighting shade. So you could easily wear all three together if you so wished! I find that they all can be mixed around really easily (very versatile products) and not pigeon holed into their direct purposes.

As I mentioned in the vid above, these multiples are all brilliant as products individually, they are so easy to work with and you can really build without it caking and looking unsightly close up. I will say this though, and this is because some of these multiples are very shimmery (particularly Orgasm and Luxor), that if you do apply it too generously it can look a tiny bit too ‘sparkle’ and possibly greasy (even though your skin isn’t at all), but that’s just because of how light reflective they are. It doesn’t actually make your skin greasy at all.

I am completely in love with these mini multiples, the staying power is amazing and it’s so easy to apply! And I can’t imagine one person who wouldn’t suit every single shade (and love it!). Although I currently don’t have any of the larger sizes of these particular shades, I am definitely gonna pick up an Orgasm Multiple stick now and keep this lil’ mini one for my touch up ‘on the go’ make-up bag! I’m literally wearing it ALL the time! So as I mentioned in the vid it’s a great introduction to the most popular Multiples shades by Nars, as well as a handy handbag size for the already long time lovers!

If you want to buy a lucky lady a gift she’d really appreciate, and maybe without realising until she tries it, LOVES, than I 100% recommend this set! Oh, and of course you can totally spoil yourself and buy your good self a very necessary treat!

A/W trend: Dark, dark vamp lips…

First off, apologies for the lack of posts this week. My sister is getting married in a couple of weeks and I have had soo much to do in help with prep for the big day (anyone feel like writing 400 wedding invitations??), and also it’s been Ramadan so my energy has been pretty low. But anyway, whilst in in my Ramadan seclusion (I hardly go out at all during this holy month) I’ve managed to keep an eye on the trends for Autumn/Winter this year, and something I’ve noticed cropping up in every A/W make-up collection and on all the hippest of celebs is dark, vampish lips. This can vary from a deep red to an almost black purple, and can be glossy or matte. I personally am all over the dark purples right now, although admittedly it is quite hard to wear. Here are two [new] lipsticks, Nars Pure Matte in Volga and Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupte Perle in Mesmerizing Purple, that have launched recently which are BANG on trend to recreate this look.

I think it’s really important that if you are going to rock this trend to accompany it with a few other major make-up trends for fall or else you could risk looking overdone and contradicting the look entirely.

These other trends are:

  • No mascara (I know, it’s a toughie)
  • Natural/bare eyelids
  • Strong, full, defined eyebrows
  • Lipliner for perfect lipstick (lipliner is FINALLY back!!)

Your base should ideally be matte, but not cakey or too heavy (sorry, I can’t do matte so I’ve got semi matte here), and cheeks should remain colour free other than some honey or caramel sheen/shimmer. The entire face, bar lips, should pretty much be tones of nude and not heavy/caked in texture and finish. You basically should aim to look like you have a polished, verging on neutral/bare subtly sculpted face.

This YSL lipstick I have here is part of their new Rock & Baroque Autumn collection. It is actually the limited edition Autumn colour of a completely brand new lipstick range they’ve just launched, Rouge Volupte Perle. As the shade name suggests, Mesmerizing Purple is a deep, intense purple.

SNB15283

It’s a strange consistency, almost more greasy than glossy, but I love it. Especially in this particular shade. As the colour is such a deep, rich colour in a high pigmented sheer formula, you really need a lipliner to ‘keep’ the lipstick in place as without (damn, even with) it’s prone to smearing and spreading, but because it’s soooo beautiful on I think you can live with it being quite high maintenance.

I love the little pieces of glitter delicately speckled throughout it; it is an amazing evening lippie and looks great in evening light – the light really catches the shimmer and glitter!

SNB15683x

Didn’t get round to doing my brows (or anything else for that matter!) in this pic as was getting ready to leave the house quickly and it was early daytime; the pics for Nars further below display more ‘statement’ brows, caramel shimmer cheeks, full Autumn trends, etc, in them.

This Nars lipstick is also part of a new lipstick collection recently launched called Pure Matte. I was lucky enough to be invited to visit their concession in Selfridges two days ago to have a lipstick matched for me out of the six shades forming this range. In all honesty, I probably could have taken all six of the shades home as they were all so gorgeous, but decided, despite how besotted I was with the ruby red, that this shade called Volga was definitely the one as it is perfect for the season (I might go back for the red).

SNB15608x

It’s an interesting colour, a mixture of maroon and purple. VERY dark on, but can also be worn more subtly if you don’t want to go too vamp. It’s a matte texture, and your lips seriously need to be in good condition to work this; any hint of a flake and it is amplified tenfold. Again, a lipliner to line the lips and also to deepen the colour on the centre of the lip (where the lipstick is harder to apply as it is water resistant) is required.

SNB15954

Here I have ‘statement’ full, groomed brows, no mascara, bare eyelids, caramel shimmer cheeks (actually a bit too much caramel shimmer here!), [semi] matte base to contrast with the dark lips.

It’s a real matte, strong, heavy statement lip. Classic but edgy.

I love both of these lipsticks, even though they are technically part of the same trend they are completely different in my eyes as one is glossy and sheer whilst the other is super matte and heavy. At the moment I am probably leaning towards the YSL Mesmerizing Purple as I love the decadence of the gloss and glitter, so perfect for evenings out and teamed with the blackish purple shade it is divine. However the matte maroon/berry shade from Nars (Volga) is also beautiful and very striking.. Eek, don’t make me choose! One thing I do know is that I’m am definitely going to get lots of wear out of both of them.

YSL Rouge Volupte Perle No106 Mesmerizing Purple is priced at £24 and is limited edition, Nars Pure Matte in Volga is priced at £18 and is currently exclusive to Selfridges, both are available to purchase now.

What do you think?

Nars Multiple Tint in Turks & Caicos

There are two things I love most in the world, the colour orange and dewy cheeks. I am a huge cream blush girl and that is actually my favourite ‘part’ of make-up – I always get most excited about owning a new cream blusher. So when the Nars Multiple Tint in Turks & Caicos landed on my doorstep it seemed like the perfect match, and actually, you know, after a month of trialing, I discovered it pretty much was!

SNB14318

SNB14319

SNB14326

As with all Nars Multiples it comes in a chunky stick that will no doubt last you yeeeears. To apply, you simply spread over cheeks straight from the tube, and then blend a little. Actually, this product is so great you could even skip the blending and I doubt anyone would notice. And whilst you can get a gorgeous sheer wash of dewy jelly sheen to your cheeks with simply one application, a couple of extra swipes will really build up coverage and colour easily so it doesn’t have to a ‘barely there’ product at all. As you can tell from my pics, I’m Asian and it shows up amazingly (even with my rubbish camera washing everything out) – so pretty sure this will work for all skin tones, including black (although obviously won’t be as bright as it is on paler skins).

But how does it last? Usually with these types of products because of their formulation they can disappear quite quickly and you need to keep re-applying often to get that gloss and colour back on your cheeks. Not with this baby. I’d apply, check my make-up a few hours later and my cheeks would still be dewy and bright. Sometimes, after possibly 6 hours of wear the gloss might start to fade (although you can still feel it which is reassuring) but the colour still remains; a quick swipe is all that is needed to put the sheen back into it!

Admittedly, on the lips it’s just okay, not as brilliant as on the cheeks and it kinda tastes funny which doesn’t work in its favour, but it’s okay and somewhat nourishing – however you are compromised on the colour pay off massively. It’s definitely much sheerer on the lips. If you only wanted to take a few products out with you this will certainly suffice to cover both lips and cheeks, but I’d generally prefer to bring a separate lip product as I like a little stronger colour on mine.

But overall, I love love love this product! I think the quality is amazing and am so impressed with how well it lasts, I might prefer it if it was slightly more shinier on the cheeks but really can’t be sure as I do genuinely love it the way it already is. However, it is £27 so that’s quite a hefty price tag and I would be happier paying something between £15-£23 for a blusher instead. But it is Nars, they’re expensive, and you do pay for the quality. Plus, this really is gonna last you years! I would definitely re-purchase when (if I ever do!) run out. And I would love to try the other colours too (maybe Cadaques next?) – actually, I would love all three of these multiple tints in my collection! And worryingly, at £27 a pop, I can totally see it happening one day…
