Thursday Night Facial!

Ha, quite funny that I had planned to write this post last Thursday but The Sickness had gotten hold of me and left me just one step ever so slightly below bedridden. Yes, I do get ill quite a bit, blame my goddam immune system – or its deficiency, to be precise.

Anyhoo, the Thursday Night Facial has been a regime I have practiced for about 10 years now – it is basically a weekly mini facial I give myself consisting of an exfoliation treatment, followed by an intensive moisturising mask. This all tends to happen on a Thursday (right before the weekend, you see), but sometimes I rebel and do it on a Wednesday or something (ooooo!), but it definitely happens once a week.

The products vary, if something is working I tend to use it till it finishes but understandeably since I’ve been blogging I luckily get a fair bit to try, so I try and to mix it up and try as much as possible instead of sticking to one thing. At the moment, I am on a winning streak with these two amazing products that I’ve been using well over a month now.

NuBo Diamond Peel and Reveal
This NuBo Diamond Peel and Reveal gives you as effective results as any microdermabrasion at home treatment (despite not being one), but your skin doesn’t fall apart if you switch to a lighter exfoliator the following week (has anyone else found this problem with microdermabrasion?). Plus, the results you get from first treatment are just as glowing and smooth as the last! I’ve been using this product a good few months now – possibly six? And it has so far lived up to expectation with every use.

The two step treatment consists of The Exfoliator that you massage onto clean skin for two minutes in circular motions, which is then followed with part two, The Activator, which you apply on top of The Exfoliator (part one) and massage further until a white paste forms. Once a minute pasts, you rinse off. A really quick and easy deep exfoliating treatment, but with the added refinement of crushed diamonds! Gush!

My only one complaint is that, considering it is fairly expensive, I was rather traumatised to discover quite early on that The Exfoliator part (the bit with the diamonds!) had leaked inside the lid resulting in half the product coming out! Unfortunately the tube is the type that keeps blurting product out until you jam the lid back on, and even then, once the lid is tightly put back on, the only way to stop further leaking is to stand the product upside down on the shelf (I discovered this way too late). Had I paid the full sixty five notes for this I would have been PISSED, alas it was a PR sample but I was still rather heartbroken over the product loss..

Worringly, I am getting more and more besotted with NuBo products as they days go on, and I’m even starting to rationalise that £65 is totally worth it for an exfoliator. It is expensive, but my goodness it is lovely.

Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask
I know lots of people would probably go for a clarifying face mask if they were to go for a face mask, however as my skin is on the dry side I try to put nourishment and moisture back into it so the richest, loveliest, most radiant inducing masks are the ones I always go for.

Paula’s Choice Skin Recovery Hydrating Treatment Mask may come in simple, very unglamourous packaging but don’t let that fool you. I’ve been using it for a couple of months now, once a week, and the next day after use my skin is GORGEOUS. Velvety soft and plump. Radiant. It is definitely one of those products that give your skin the much needed ‘bump’ before a big event, if you’re on the look out for something that does.

The texture of it is like a thick body cream, fragrance less, and very much no nonsense. You really have no idea whilst you’re wearing it that you’ll reap such lovely results the next day. For the older ladies amongst us, it’s one of those ‘ten years younger in a bottle’ products and definitely falls in the top three, if not first, of best hydrating face masks I’ve tried (I’ll have to really think about this and go through ten years worth of them to say for sure!). If your skin is feeling particularly parched on a non facial night you can even use this as a night cream, too.

But here’s the best bit, you get a very generous sized tube of the product, that will last you an age, and it only costs £14.95.. ! BARGAIN. I predict this tube is probably going to last me a good few months, well into the rest of this year and probably the first quarter of the next. Outstanding value for money. And such a good quality product!

So that’s what I’m currently rocking for Thursday Night Facials! What are your favourite at home facial products at the moment?

My kinda coffee table books…

SNB10722

Weirdly, within the last seven days I have been given two amazing books that I am so grateful to now own. One is great for make-up inspiration, the other is pretty much your bible for skincare.

Makeup is Art by Jana Ririnui & Lan Nguyen.

SNB10704

This book is like a work of art, I haven’t found the time to digest all the tremendous images but every time I’ve flicked through it I’ve always cooed and caught my breath at the sometimes astonishing make-up shots. Unlike other ‘make-up’ books which tend to cater for the hard and fast rules of make-up (possibly even some step-by-step application techniques thrown in, too), this one is meant mostly for inspiration for all those who are passionate about it.

The co-writer of Makeup is Art, Jana Ririnui, is the founder of AOFM (the Academy of Freelance Makeup), a make-up school which I was lucky to visit last Friday morning. Having trained myself at Greasepaint School of Make-up, which in all honesty I don’t really have any positive opinion on, what stood out for me for this school was their exceptional student aftercare. Once you’ve done a course, you’re welcome to come back for a bunch of free courses that the school regularly holds. Not only that, they appear to really believe in their students and always try to find them some kind of industry work afterwards.

I am not aware of prices for the range of courses they do so can’t really comment on whether they seem fair or not (from my understanding, all of these make-up schools are costly and they’re expected to be so), but I liked the staff and the fact that Shu Uemura, Becca, Dermologica and Bobbi Brown (for US) have chosen this school exclusively to be the official sponsors of speaks volumes.

Don’t Go to the Cosmetic Counter Without Me (8th Edition) by Paula Begoun.

SNB10727

This is a book that I have probably wanted for at least two years now, if not longer. I actually think I had discovered Paula before I had even started blogging! For those who are unaware, Paula Begoun is an American ‘Consumer Advocate’, nicknamed The Cosmetic Cop. The book lists hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of brands, dissecting their products, research and ingredients, allowing us to steer clear of  the products that are a waste of money, and only investing in the ones that actually work.

I met this wonderful lady only yesterday, where she gave a brilliant talk about the major skincare myths and basic facts. Here are a few of them..

1. Do not use anything from jars. The moment your product comes into contact with oxygen, it starts to die. Anything airtight with pump is always best.

2. There is no need for a separate eye cream. Just use whatever you’re using on the rest of your face!

3. SPF, SPF, SPF! Apparently the sun can even attack our skin through a window, and it only takes a minute for damage to begin happening.

When I find a second in this mad, busy week I will look up every single skin care product I’m currently using and see what she has to say about it!

Both really fascinating books, can’t wait to get stuck in.
