NOTD: Pixi Tinkerbell Pirouette Pink!

Lazeeee post today, I painted my nails yesterday on the train in this eye catching Pixi* shade from their collab range with Disney (which I covered briefly here, full post coming soon!) – I think I like it! It’s very bright, not for the faint hearted! But it’s really lovely for Summer and looks great with tanned skin. It’s the sort of shade you keep looking at, trying to figure out your opinion on it, it takes me a second but then I think, ‘Yeah, it’s cool I like it’.

It does need a top coat, it has a weird rubbery finish without, but that’s only noticeable close up (you can probably see this in the picture). I’ve applied three coats here as two wasn’t enough for an even colour, however I often apply three coats with nail varnish just for added depth of colour.Yesterday was a fun day, I had a Prosecco Picnic with a.. friend (a handsome one!) and wore one of my favourite summer dresses – a tiger print knee length that’s bright orange. I’ll probably wear it again next week so will do an outfit post showing it. Now the weather’s getting warmer it’s exciting to wear pretty dresses and sandals. Plus, sandals are usually way comfier than regular shoes/boots – or am I the only one that thinks this? Probably because you can get away with ill-fitting sandals which is a big plus (necessity) in my eyes..

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Weekly update featuring GlossyBox & Harrods, Pixi, Clippy London and more..

Thought I’d do a weekly update instead of bi-monthly as this week is pretty quiet for me in terms of exciting blogging stuff, and last week.. well, wasn’t!First up, what most people have been writing loads about is the Harrods collaboration with GlossyBox this month! If you haven’t got your boxes already, or bizarrely haven’t read up on what to expect, this is what was inside mine…Narciso Rodriguez for her EDP
YSL Forever Youth Liberator Serum
Molton Brown Heavenly Gingerlily Moisture Bath & Shower
Burberry Miniature Lip Mist in Copper No. 202
Ojon Damage Reverse Instant Restorative Hair Serum

I LOVE my Burberry Lipstick, I hear there were two types you can get but I think I lucked out with my one! Also, the Narciso Rodriguez fragrance is gorgeous – I bought that for my Mum once a few years back, so lovely! Actually appreciate this sample size as it’s a fragrance I really like. Generally an all-round decent box, could have done without the Molton Brown sample but the other products more than make up for it.I just want to add how DELICIOUS the catering was at the GlossyBox Harrods launch, selected from Harrods’ Laduree – this blows the usual event cupcakes out of the water! I actually am not a fan of cupcakes, or sweet things in general (maybe with a cup of tea but not on their own), however I could easily eat this entire tray in one sitting. Nomnomnom..Prior that event I popped into Pixi for the launch of another collaboration, this time between Pixi and Disney! The Pixi Disney Tinkerbell range consists of a lip and eye palette, eye shadow stick, eye liner, lip tint, nail varnish and glitter dust all encased in cutesy Disney inspired packaging! From first impressions I heart the eye/lip palette and fluoro nail varnish most, but this could change once I’ve had a play around!I also got a FANTABULOUS (that mean fantastic and fabulous, btw) dip dye at Lisa Shepherd in London. If you haven’t read about that, you can read about it here. Still over the moon about it..

Don’t forget, readers of my blog can get a nice 25% discount from treatment price if they quote Make Up to Make Out when booking! You also get a free shampoo and conditioner too! Details in the post about it here..Clippy London also kindly sent me some lovely bits because I had lost my make-up bag at Fashion Week and they were offering it as a replacement. Admittedly, I did find my make-up bag again but you can never have too many, eh? I’m always switching and mixing mine up. Alongside the make-up bags I also got some other really useful products like a cool ‘Phone Home’ (a home for your phone!) and antique pink leather purse, so will cover all of these things soon – really, really love them all so far! Finally, Whooga sent me what has been independently rated as the most comfiest uggs out there.. And I agree! I haven’t worn them out yet, but I’ve been wearing them around the house as a form of slippers and they are oh sooo comfy. It’s been really chilly and rainy the last few days so have really appreciated the extra warmth. I already have some EMU uggs and will agree that these Whooga’s are definitely cosier and warmer!

They fit nice and snug too – I’m wearing a size 3 here which actually fits well for the style of boot, a little roomy in the foot but nice on the leg. However if you have really diddy feet they even do kid sizes that go up to 2.5!They also have a good, thick sole so none of that horrible side overhang so common with girls who probably wear their uggs too much – you know what I mean, don’t you? It’s like the sole has completely disappeared and the inside side of the boot has collapsed over it. Hate that. By looking at the soles on these Whooga’s uggs they looks like they’ll provide good support!

I also saw The Muppets. :) Awww, it was great fun. Definitely recommend it! Lots of slebs so worth a watch if you just like films with lots of cameos.. Although good in its own right even without the slebs!

So that’s been my week.. :)

Pixi Nail Varnish – No. 7 Opal Pink

I was sent this nail varnish by Pixi a while back, and as it’s not really the sort of colour I would ordinarily go for I had really procrastinated in reviewing it. However I finally got round to painting my digits with it and yes, it’s still not my kinda shade; having darker, yellow tone skin this pale pearly pink isn’t naturally the best accompaniment, but for gals with paler Caucasian skin this could be right up your street.

I really like the brand Pixi, all of the products I’ve tried of theirs have been of a certain standard and I’ve always ended up loving them. I love their philosophy of quirky but good quality make-up that is fairly reasonably priced (well, not completely unreasonably, anyway). I’ve only tried one nail varnish of theirs prior and it was a neon fluoro pink (No.13) which I LOVED and used up completely, and this varnish in texture and application was pretty much the same. Went on fairly smoothly (being pearlescent you’d expect it to be tricky and streaky but it was actually quite easy and consistent) and although not the fastest drying varnish out there, once on it did last a good few days before the chip set in.

I applied about 2-3 coats, in hindsight I’d expect most to only really apply one or two max as it’s meant to be a subtle shade, but I kinda got carried away so the colour probably looks stronger and milkier than most would wear it. This just means that you can get a pretty subtle wash of colour tinting your nails, OR you can do what I did and coat it on!

Verdict
All in all, great nail varnish formula from a trusted good quality brand, and the shade is okay but not really something I would wear personally – but I can imagine so many others who would and I’m sure it’d look great on them!

Pixi Nail Varnish – ‘No 13′

Oh how I love fluoro nails! Admittedly, I had my most passionate affair with them during the Summer of ’08 and the love has dwindled slightly but I can’t seem to fully kick the habit (well, just yet). No matter what is on trend, there is nothing like a pop of bright fluoros on your digits for Summer.

This is Pixi shade no13 is a gorgeous neon fluoro pink, deliciously eye catching in its simple glass bottle and metallic lid.

Application
When reviewing nail varnishes I think it’s fair to review them entirely on their own – with no topcoat. I do use a basecoat as I don’t wish for my nails to be stained but when it comes to topcoat, this can literally transform a nail varnish so it’s not fair to review them with this on (as no doubt they’ll all be smashing reviews!). As I’ve mentioned in previous nail reviews, it’s good to know what you can depend on when you’re short of time and haven’t the luxury of a full manicure; when you’ve simply just got time to swipe and go.

Applying this varnish can be a little tricky, it’s a thick consistency but also very runny at the same time. You can get a really decent coat with just one application, but I’d advise two thin ones to get a nice even, non streaky coverage. Be careful though, as this product has a tendency to literally run down the length of the brush and on to your hand out of nowhere! This is because it is soooo runny. This isn’t a major problem once you’ve been alerted to it, but if you haven’t you could be left with a massive neon pink splodge on your hand out of nowhere!

Verdict
In general, this is a good, all rounder nail varnish. The shade is utterly perfect, a nice, strong shot of neon pink that will suit all skin tones as it is a statement shade. It definitely beats a lot of the competitive brands and it’s staying power is simply the best I’ve come across (remember, this is without a topcoat!). Where it fails is that it does take a while to set, like really. If you only had a quick ten minutes to apply this you’ll be screwed, you’ll need at least a good half hour. And even once it’s set, it’s very easy to get scratches and dents in the varnish, I suppose this is because it is quite thick, for whatever reason this results in it being less pretty close up. It also doesn’t set very glossy, it actually has a kind of rubbery finish which strangely works for this shade but would still look better if it was a glossy. Admittedly, all these problems could easily be solved with a good topcoat, the scratches and dents would be gone, you’d get a gorgeous shiny finish and with this product it would make it last a good week or so. But, one thing I should mention here is that if you really didn’t apply a topcoat, it certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world, your nails would look acceptable without and like I mentioned, they last amazingly well on it’s own. I didn’t get a hint of chip until at least day four, really impressive!

So in conclusion, I do like this varnish, with a topcoat it would be amazing, and it’s great for summer if you’re busy and using your hands a lot as it’s so durable. I do definitely advise a topcoat though, just to give it a better finish as I really don’t like little dents in my manicure. One other nice thing, it’s perfect for the toes! Pretty much one layer is all you need to get a lovely pop of neon pink on your tootsies! Fantastic.

Pixi Sheer Base Oil Free (Foundation)

Many, many moons ago, straight out of make-up school I started working part time for Pixi at their boutique in London. Whilst working there wasn’t exactly the high light of my working career, I did leave with a new found respect for many of their products. It was actually an introduction to their products, as I had never even used any of their make-up prior to the job.

Along with the lovely cheek gel-stains and lip glosses, I discovered their moisturising foundation was simply AMAZING. In shade no 5 it was the perfect colour match for my skin, and gave a beautiful healthy glowy natural finish, with decent coverage. The texture on my skin was beautiful, as it was natural finish, almost undetectable yet my skin looked perfect whilst firm, if that makes sense? Admittedly, you had to have good skin in the first place to wear this foundation as if my skin was a little on the extra dryer side or I’d imagine if I had acne skin this product would look awful on, but with good normal skin, the occasional spot perhaps, not too many lines, it was beautiful.

So a few years down the line, long after I ceased working for them, I decided I’d buy this foundation again as I was getting bored of the brilliant Mac Face and Body. Off I go into the store and to my horror they’ve discontinued shade no 5 in that range, so I was advised to get shade no 5 in the OIL FREE version of that foundation, as it was still for all skin tones but generally better for people with oilier skin (not me) as apposed to the moisturising one. Hmmm, I wasn’t happy about this as I knew the oil free version was for a matte finish (albeit, natural matte finish) but thought I’d give it a try anyway..

So here it is..
It comes in a glass bottle, with a white plastic lid and is pump action. At £24 it is not the cheapest of foundations for a small brand but not unacceptably expensive.

Application

Initially when I first bought this I would apply it with my fingers, as the other moisturising foundation I’ve previously tried of theirs applied well that way. I’ve since discovered this foundation is applied far better with a good foundation brush, I use a Bobbi Brown foundation brush. This product, like their other foundation, is quick setting, you literally just paint it onto your skin and it sets to a beautiful flawless finish.

Being natural finish, it wasn’t cakey or clumpy like another foundation might be. It just really improved the texture of your skin, without being overtly matte or dewy. This is actually my favourite kind of finish in foundations, but is a rarity to find (or the sales assistants don’t really understand what natural finish is, they often just think it’s simply ‘light coverage’) so I usually just end up asking for dewy.

Verdict
Whilst this foundation applied extremely easily, and set to a nice finish without having to use powder (for those with oilier skin, sure, you can use a powder on top!), I found it didn’t last very long on the skin as it wasn’t really for dry skin (despite claiming to be for all skin types). It would look amazing as soon as it was applied, but my skin would literally just absorb it within a few hours when I wore it out. I could sometimes feel it being tight on my skin, most likely due to its oil absorbing properties.

Admittedly, when I tried it on again more recently for this review, it lasted outstandingly longer whilst I was just pottering around in the house, over a good six hours it was perfectly (and comfortably) in tact before I took it off to go to bed. This could be because I applied it with a foundation brush, as opposed to fingers, straight after thoroughly moisturised skin – possibly makes it last longer on dryer skin? Who knows, but I’m not sure it would fare as well if I actually spent a good day outside running around, busy, maybe dehydrated, as of course make-up wears off quicker out and about as opposed to say, sitting still indoors surfing the web!

So in conclusion, whilst I loved the look this foundation gave, if you have dryer skin I wouldn’t advise it. If you have normal to oilier this a perfect foundation for you (providing you like the finish it gives and don’t want the heavy cakey matte look). Having said that, if you want to buy it, you gotta buy it quick! As I think they’re discontinuing it as it’s not on their website anymore, as is neither any of the moisturising version either. I think ASOS is selling only three shades of this oil free one for half price! So if you want it, be quick!!
