Aveda Smooth Infusion – The Verdict

Ah, so here we are, my final post on the Aveda Smooth Infusion range. I have been trialling this range for the last month, and I have to say, I’m glad I committed to it for a whole month as my initial opinion is vastly different to the one I have now….

PRODUCTS TRIALED:

SNB18051

Aveda Smooth Infusion Shampoo

Aveda Smooth Infusion Conditioner

Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep

Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener

From my previous posts, HERE and HERE, I didn’t really have that much to say about the Smooth Infusion range other than it smelt divine (still does, by the way) and the Style-Prep was a good prep product. I had doubts about how strong and effective the shampoo and conditioner were for treating fairly damaged hair, i.e. mine, and since I’ve been skipping any other serums or products other than the ones included in the range, you may recall I had trouble combing the knots out.

Well, it is clear from my trial that this set works in a residual way, the more often and longer you use it the better it is in treating your hair. With cheaper shampoos and conditioners I actually notice it’s the polar opposite to this and tend to love something the first few washes then find it stops working a few weeks later. With this Aveda Smooth Infusion range, my hair, over time began to get less knotty and in the last week, granted I did have a very small amount trimmed off, I could actually run a comb relatively easily through it straight out of the shower. I haven’t been able to do this sans any moisture, de-tangling serums and creams for a looooong time. Especially in the last 3 months since I’ve been playing with hair dyes.

So whilst it took a while, I have definitely started to notice some clear results with using this set. I now actually skip the smoothing glossing straightener as I have noticed it does start to weigh curls out quicker (great for straight do’s though) and that’s how I’ve been wearing my hair of late, but Smooth Infusion Shampoo, Conditioner and Style-Prep are great products for all hair types and with long term use you can really combat that frizz and smoothness problem. Just stick at it. And did I mention they smell amazing too?

Aveda Smooth Infusion – Update..

SNB18051

So it’s been almost three weeks since my first post on the Aveda Smooth Infusion range, I have been consistently, strictly, only using these Aveda hair products and here are my thoughts thus far..

CLEANSING:

I loooooove the smell. I know this doesn’t have a bearing on how effective it is at de-frizzing, but for me it certainly is a major selling point. The shampoo and conditioner smells so fresh, and the fragrance really lasts and it definitely feels like a luxury product to use on the hair. I tend to shampoo and rinse my hair twice and then throw on a conditioner which is left on my dry, dehydrated hair for a few minutes to work, and this Aveda set is no exception. The Smooth Infusion Shampoo is very gentle, and if you’re a bit gross like me and only wash your hair a few times a week, a second application and rinse is definitely necessary to get that thoroughly clean feel.

The Smooth Infusion Conditioner does nourish my hair, but as I mentioned, sticking strictly to this Aveda range I didn’t use any serums afterwards (which I normally religiously do), so as my hair was in such bad shape since all the recent dying and non-trimming there were a few knots that I had a little trouble getting out – BUT, once I did comb the knots out and blow dry my hair it would always return to a nice, shiny finish, and all this sans serum!

STYLING:

SNB18055x

The Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother is a lovely product, as it’s a prep it essentially prepares your hair for styling and makes it more ‘workable’, and in this particular instance we have the addition of up to 12 hours defence against humidity. As I used the entire range together it’s hard to pinpoint what did what in regards to de-frizzing, but this prep product really helped style my hair and was a good texture and consistency to work with; light and fluid so you could cover a vast amount of hair easily.

As for the Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener, my stylist during my Aveda visit recommended not to use too much of this as it would be too heavy for my fine hair. A tiny amount was all that was needed. Well, all I can say is that she is right! The first time I used this product I applied way too much and my hair got greasy within a day, eek! Now, I just apply a little through the ends and this works wonderfully in smoothing my vile split ends over and and finishing my hair nicely. Whilst the product is called a ‘straightener’, I have mostly worn my hair in waves and curls these past weeks and haven’t noticed the curls falling out more than usual or anything. If you wanted to go for a smooth, frizz free polker straight look, this product will no doubt provide that effortlessly, but I find it’s just great at weighing down the flyaway fine ends and smoothing all hair types.

I am going to continue to trial these products for another two weeks and really monitor the residual results. You may notice from the first image that we were given a little tiny sample sized set alongside the full sized versions so I have no excuse to stray as I can easily carry that in my overnight bag if needs be. So far I have noticed my over-dyed and processed hair has been smoother and less frizzy in humid places (packed clubs, pubs, etc) and what I like best about it is my hair still has body and isn’t heavy. I have given up my beloved styling mouse to provide a fair trial whilst using these products, and maybe this is down to the Smooth Infusion Style-Prep but my hair has been remarkably lacking in limp! But let’s wait for the full results and verdict in a couple of weeks..

Frizzy hair, yuck, I hate it. And since I’ve been dying and curling and over styling my hair I’ve very much a been victim of the frizz. So when I was offered the chance to visit the Aveda Institute in Covent Garden to try their Smooth Infusion range, I naturally jumped at it. My ever so lovely stylist Joon knew exactly what I was about and what I wanted and catered the range accordingly to meet my needs perfectly. I didn’t want poker straight hair or anything too polished, despite this being a smoothing treatment, I wanted gorgeous bouncy voluminous hair (the want of every flat haired individual) but simply without the frizz. So she set to work..

She shampooed my hair with Pure Abundance volumising shampoo, and then used the Smooth Infusion Conditioner lightly on the ends, as anything too near my roots would be too heavy for my fine hair. Once washed, she started the drying!

Joon sprits some Smooth Infusion Style-Prep Smoother and then used a large metal round brush to blow dry my hair (she explained how the heat from the hairdryer makes this brush work almost like a heated curling tong!) into waves, and then pinned the waves into place while they cooled.

Here’s a quick clip roughly showing how this was done which Dil from SCforM kindly shot with my camera!

Yeah, I know, I wish I let him carry on filming too.

Sooooooo smooth, right?

SNB17803

Once Joon took the curls out, she finished the style with lots of this amazing product from the Aveda Pure Abundance range called Hair Potion which thickens the hairs appearance! It’s a powder you simply sprinkle into your roots then rub and scrunch in! I witnessed how brilliantly it worked for root lift! I was warned not to shake the bottle before use though as it literally turns into liquid right then and there and thus ruins its effectiveness.

Ta-daaaa! Some footage I shot of ‘the result’.

We did actually have professional ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots taken by a photographer, but obviously I haven’t got these yet so here are a few quick snaps I took myself in the toilets of the train station! I only had a few minutes before my train was due and I wanted to capture the style while it was relatively fresh, unfortunately that is always a challenge in rainy England and I was a little bit caught in the rain on the way to the train station, booo. But it’s not looking too bad, and what better way to monitor the frizz control, huh?

Voguing in the toilets.

I have no shame actively taking pics of myself in a busy public toilet! Haha! You gotta do what you gotta do!

We were given bits from the Smooth Infusion range to take home so we could continue to trial it ourselves, and my OH SO LOVELY stylist Joon also sneaked me in a Pure Abundance Hair Potion too! I love her!

So, yes, seeing as it’s only been a matter of hours since the treatment I’ve yet to really form an opinion about how effective it is at maintaining smoothness. Need to have a play around with it myself and give it a real good test out (I’m thinking sweaty horrible humid club? Or sweaty horrible humid gig?). But I loved how great my hair looked and really appreciated all the styling tips and the general lovely-ness of the entire evening!

Will report back in a week or so to let you know how I’m getting on with this Aveda Smoothing Infusion range. :)
