I have long perused the lip balm isle in shops and often flirted occasionally with idea of purchasing Burt’s Bees Lip Balm. It had a lot of the factors I look for in a lip balm; non petroleum based, natural ingredients, good for the skin, gentle, cute packaging, a little quirky. But most all, it looked like it could potentially genuinely work.
The only thing that stopped me from taking the plunge and purchasing it was the word “lanolin” in its ingredients’ list. Lanolin is a known allergen of mine, and generally, in skincare products, I fully keep away. But it’s been a long while now since I’ve tried a skincare product with lanolin that my skin may have changed and toughened up a little bit without me even realising, this happens as your skin is constantly changing. Getting this lip balm to try was the perfect opportunity to test the water, I decided I’ll give it a try and the moment my lips tingle (in a bad, hot, allergic way) I’ll stop and that should be enough to stop the attack in its’ tracks.
Application
It comes in a cute mustard colour tube, with red writing. Nothing particularly new or exciting there, but I like the way it looks, it has class and certainly beats the usual choice of white plastic with blue writing packaging of most lip care brands.
As with all stick lip balms, you roll up a little of the stick with it’s dial at the bottom and apply it to your lips, a good point to mention – you can roll it back down as well, thankfully. The consistency is the perfect lip balm consistency, nice and hard, but still very easy to saturate your lips generously with the product. I hate lip balms that are just like vaseline, runny, thin and too much product sitting on the surface of your lips. This doesn’t do that at all, you get the perfect amount and it instantly starts to work deep into the lips. It contains peppermint which tingles on your lips making it really refreshing to use.
Verdict
Well, I’ve discovered that despite this containing Lanolin I have no problems with it whatsoever, nothing, nada, not even a slight itching. If anything, this has really helped an allergy of mine! Well, not so much allergy, I had some cracked, sensitive skin above my top lip/below my nose from excessive tissue rubbing due to suffering the flu (urgh), I tried using moisturiser but that just absorbed way too quick, tried Vaseline, arghhh! Worst idea ever, itchy and hot! I finally decided to try this and it instantly soothed the inflamed area, after spending a few hours applying it about 80% of the flakes had gone and it was noticeably better (and far more comfortable). Admittedly, I was applying it every hour, if not more often, but the fact is it has been the only product to work out of my arsenal of products which is pretty damn impressive!
But back to it as a LIP BALM. Well, as I’m sure you can guess, it’s great. From the first application my lips that were problematically parched from my flu sickness were instantly nourished, dry flakes began to disappear. I’ve been using it for a few days now and my lips are almost back to perfect condition! Phew! I can go back to wearing lipsticks now! Hooray! And I just simply love the tingling peppermint, great for summer. My only one problem with it, and it is a pretty big one, is that is has no SPF. Why??! You would be THE perfect lip balm if you had a good SPF, Please add this Burt’s Bees, this is the only way you are lacking and you’d be surprised how many people would be put off by the fact you don’t have this. I am contemplating wearing this first, than throwing on lip balm with a high SPF straight on top for outside use, a bit annoying but has to be done. But other than that, a brilliant, outstanding product.
