I’m currently feeling very inspired by 90′s film Reality Bites. I adored that film when I was a teen (had the VHS and CD soundtrack) and I even remember taking a picture of Lelaina Pierce, Winona Ryder’s character, into the hairdressers and demanding they cut my hair just like it. I was so in love with her style and influenced by it I couldn’t copy enough of it at the time (I was very impressionable at 14!).
In fairness, even now looking back at the pics the styling for that character is still pretty awesome; 90′s, but timeless in its own right. I guess it must be that I equate that film with a trend that has been slowly seeping into my subconscious making me desire a more androgynous look. Clunky brogues/brothel creepers, ill fitting jackets and suits, midi length broad shouldered dresses, etc…
Kingston-Eva Sole Brogues, £60
A few months back I purchased this hybrid pair of creeper brogues online from the Topshop, unfortunately Topshop did that cheeky thing where they take it out of your basket after you’ve paid and only send you the crap you bought to make it enough to qualify for free shipping because apparently now it’s out of stock. I am still mourning the virtual loss of them now.
Magic Black Patent Brogues, £30
A couple of weeks ago I bought these pair of brogues, again online at Topshp. Whilst they’re cheap and cheerful I felt they just didn’t hit the spot; I was hoping the sole would be all thick around the edges like they were on the website but alas it wasn’t.
So the quest continues for the perfect brogue, brothel creeper, creeper brogue… In the meanwhile, here are some snaps of my favourite Winny looks from Reality Bites..
Love her style, the perfect embodiment of American-indie-gen-x-slackernessss.
