Max Factor Lash Extension Effect Mascara – Revisited!

Back in January I attended a fantastic Max Factor event where I was fortunate enough to have celebrity Make-up Artist Caroline Barnes apply their new mascara on me. I got the most amazing lash separation and it did genuinely look like I had lash extensions or inserts applied! You can read that post HERE

Now, it’s all very well to coo over over how great a mascara is when a celebrity Make-up Artist has applied it, but it can be quite another story when we try to recreate the look ourselves. So after having worn this mascara consistently for the last two months, let’s see if I did manage to recreate the same effect Caroline did on me!

Just to quickly re-cap what Max Factor’s Lash Extension Effect Mascara is about, it is quite simply exactly as the name suggests – a mascara that mimics genuine lash extensions! And it even contains the same nylon lash extension fibres used in lash extensions – oh my.

In the past we’ve gotten used to brands bringing out bigger, more voluminous and heavier effect lashes (I do believe Maybeline’s ‘Falsies’ actually boast ‘zero gaps’ with their new formula), and in the process have almost forgotten what real false lashes or lash extensions look like. Thankfully, this mascara is all about separation and elongation! But of the false variety. Think of Twiggy in the 60’s. Don’t think Jordan in the 00’s.

This is the look Caroline created on me with this mascara:

This is my own attempt of creating it using her step by step method (you can read about her step by step method here):

So what do you think?

I really like it and think it looks pretty with a fairly natural and contoured face. I should add that this was all BC, BC stands for ‘before [metal] comb’ which is the lash comb that Caroline used to comb the mascara through once applied which I didn’t own until last Thursday (I only had a pathetic plastic one). Since metal comb purchase I can get a little extra length than pictured here which makes the world of difference! Woo!

Generally, when I don’t have a full five minutes to concentrate solely on my lashes I find this mascara still works well in defining my lashes and separating them, but obviously to get the best results it will take time. I sometimes, if I do want more volume, add another thicker mascara on the top lashes but mainly I just stick to this one, and three or four coats usually does it for me.

I do have one minor complaint though, while it never smudges (amazing considering I wear a lot on my bottom lashes) it can crumble, which I expect is just the nylon lash fibres coming off. Either way though that doesn’t bother me too much and I still really like this mascara for everything else it does and will definitely repurchase! If only strictly to do my lower lashes!

Max Factor Lash Extension Effect Mascara Launch

I had a lovely day today at the Max Factors’ ‘The Lash Lounge’ event. It was showcasing their newest mascara, Lash Extension Effect, with celebrity make-up artist Caroline Barnes (Kylie’s make-up artist!), and discussing upcoming trends for lashes in SS10.

Lash trends are something I usually don’t partake in; I tend to go down the route where you pick whatever you need to make them look their fullest – for me, I naturally have long lashes (good) which are annoyingly thin (bad) so generally always go for the false lash effect mascara when choosing one. Regardless of fashions, that’s what I like on me. Or at least that’s what I thought!

Max Factor Lash Extension Effect is effectively lash extensions, in a tube. It even contains the same nylon lash extension fibres! Unlike most false lash mascaras, this one aims to genuinely mimic the effect of good false lashes – definition, separation, length and shape. As opposed to simply adding more volume and making your lashes look heavy and clumpy; A.K.A. lashes favoured by the likes of Jordan. Hmmm.. When you put it this way you really start to see their point. The future in lashes, in trends, appears to be more about definition and elongation, and framing the eye.

This sounded great in theory, but me and separating mascaras don’t have a great history, so if Caroline hadn’t given us a demonstration I would probably have remained a cynic.
Here’s how she applied it on the model..
Use the tip of the brush (incidently, Max Factor’s longest ever mascara brush) to do the lower lashes, and never use the whole brush across when doing this area.

Then use the tip again to do the inner and outer corner lashes for the upper lashes, and the length of the brush for the middle. You want to bring your lashes up and out, creating an almond shape with your lash line.

She also used another Max Factor Mascara, False Lash Effect, on the other eye, which looked pretty damn amazing in my opinion.

Then (the exciting bit) she offered to do ours, and despite already having some mascara caked on I went for it!
She combed my old mascara out, using a Ruby and Millie metal eye lash comb (plastic ones aren’t as good, according to Caroline).

Then proceeded to apply the mascara, starting with the lower lashes first.

It looked….. AMAAAAAAAZING.
I was so pleased with the result, I declared myself a convert right then and there!

I’ve been wearing it since all day and as I never wear mascara on my lower lashes it has taken some getting used to (I can feel them on my cheeks!). But I LOVED the way they genuinely look like lash inserts/fake lashes. The length and separation reminded me of Twiggy in the 60′s, a look I’ve often wanted to achieve and not thought possible without falsies and just mascara alone!

The mascara has been on now approximately 7 hours and I feel it’s still looking fairly fresh (see pic above)! I should add I have not touched up any of my make-up in the slightest (hence the pale colour-free lips!) since Caroline applied the mascara. Notice the absence of mascara smudges under the eye, see!

We were given a lovely goody bag, containing the Lash Extension Mascara and the Flash Lash Effect one, and were asked to try them both for our own respective blogs. They also gave us gorgeous zebra print tweezers by Tweezerman! Ahhhh!

So.. at the mo, utterly in love with Max Factor Lash Extension Mascara, but the real test will have to be how I get on when applying it with my own hands; not Caroline Barnes’ celebrity make-up artist hands! So check back for the review on that!

A really, really fun day! Definitely one of my favourite events so far. Well done, Max Factor!
