Pixi Nail Varnish – ‘No 13′

Oh how I love fluoro nails! Admittedly, I had my most passionate affair with them during the Summer of ’08 and the love has dwindled slightly but I can’t seem to fully kick the habit (well, just yet). No matter what is on trend, there is nothing like a pop of bright fluoros on your digits for Summer.

This is Pixi shade no13 is a gorgeous neon fluoro pink, deliciously eye catching in its simple glass bottle and metallic lid.

Application
When reviewing nail varnishes I think it’s fair to review them entirely on their own – with no topcoat. I do use a basecoat as I don’t wish for my nails to be stained but when it comes to topcoat, this can literally transform a nail varnish so it’s not fair to review them with this on (as no doubt they’ll all be smashing reviews!). As I’ve mentioned in previous nail reviews, it’s good to know what you can depend on when you’re short of time and haven’t the luxury of a full manicure; when you’ve simply just got time to swipe and go.

Applying this varnish can be a little tricky, it’s a thick consistency but also very runny at the same time. You can get a really decent coat with just one application, but I’d advise two thin ones to get a nice even, non streaky coverage. Be careful though, as this product has a tendency to literally run down the length of the brush and on to your hand out of nowhere! This is because it is soooo runny. This isn’t a major problem once you’ve been alerted to it, but if you haven’t you could be left with a massive neon pink splodge on your hand out of nowhere!

Verdict
In general, this is a good, all rounder nail varnish. The shade is utterly perfect, a nice, strong shot of neon pink that will suit all skin tones as it is a statement shade. It definitely beats a lot of the competitive brands and it’s staying power is simply the best I’ve come across (remember, this is without a topcoat!). Where it fails is that it does take a while to set, like really. If you only had a quick ten minutes to apply this you’ll be screwed, you’ll need at least a good half hour. And even once it’s set, it’s very easy to get scratches and dents in the varnish, I suppose this is because it is quite thick, for whatever reason this results in it being less pretty close up. It also doesn’t set very glossy, it actually has a kind of rubbery finish which strangely works for this shade but would still look better if it was a glossy. Admittedly, all these problems could easily be solved with a good topcoat, the scratches and dents would be gone, you’d get a gorgeous shiny finish and with this product it would make it last a good week or so. But, one thing I should mention here is that if you really didn’t apply a topcoat, it certainly wouldn’t be the end of the world, your nails would look acceptable without and like I mentioned, they last amazingly well on it’s own. I didn’t get a hint of chip until at least day four, really impressive!

So in conclusion, I do like this varnish, with a topcoat it would be amazing, and it’s great for summer if you’re busy and using your hands a lot as it’s so durable. I do definitely advise a topcoat though, just to give it a better finish as I really don’t like little dents in my manicure. One other nice thing, it’s perfect for the toes! Pretty much one layer is all you need to get a lovely pop of neon pink on your tootsies! Fantastic.
